During the second quarter of 2021, the main importer of vaccines
for human use in Central America
was El Salvador with $67 million, followed by Panama with $19 million, Honduras with $18 million, Guatemala and Costa Rica with $17 million and finally Nicaragua with $10 million.
El Salvador was the only country to record a disproportionate year-on-year increase in its purchases, with a value of 500%. For the rest of the Central American countries, imports increased as follows: Panama 3%, Guatemala 32%, Nicaragua 53%, Costa Rica 57% and Honduras 60%.Variation in Regional Business
Between January and June 2020 and the same period in 2021, the value imported in the region increased, going from $29 million to $42 million, which is equivalent to a positive variation of 45%.
Despite the increase reported for the periods in question, purchases from companies in the U.S. decreased from $27.2 million to $16 million.China, Main Supplier
As of June 2021, 34% of the value imported into the region came from China, followed by Belgium with 18%, 11% from the U.S. and 9% from South Korea.
Purchases from the U.S. have lost ground in recent years, as in the first half of 2010 they accounted for 51% of total regional imports and in 2021 the proportion fell to 11%.
