Water Heaters: More Business with Mexico

In the first nine months of 2019, Central America imported water heaters for $15 million, and purchases from companies in Mexico increased 71% over the same period in 2018.

Guatemala, Main Buyer
In the first nine months of 2019, the main importer of water heaters in Central America was Guatemala with $5.2 million, followed by Costa Rica with $4.6 million, Panama with $2.4 million, Honduras with $1.4 million, El Salvador with $1 million and Nicaragua with $400,000.

Variation in Regional Imports
Between January and September 2018 and the same period in 2019, imports fell from $16 million to $15 million.

In contrast to purchases in general, for the periods in question imports from Mexico increased, in this case from $600,000 to $1 million.

Main Suppliers
From January to September last year, 29% of the value imported from Central America came from Brazil, 27% from the USA, 19% from China, 7% from Mexico and 5% from Germany.

For the period in question of the last eight years, Mexico is the market of origin of the purchases that has grown the most, rising from 2% in 2012 to 7% in 2019.

Note: The report includes imports of electric, immersion, instantaneous gas water heaters and other types.

In recent years Chinese water heaters have gained importance in terms of the amount purchased, since from January to September 2012 they represented 12% of total Central American imports and for the same period of 2020 the proportion rose to 18%.

Brazilian Water Heaters Are Gaining Ground

In recent years’ Brazilian water heaters have gained importance in terms of the amount purchased, as in the first half of 2014 they represented 14% of total Central American imports and for the same period of 2020 the proportion rose to 31%.
