Guatemala, Main Importer
In 2020, the main importer of beer in Central America continued to be Guatemala, with $68 million, followed by Panama, with $50 million, Honduras, with $44 million, Costa Rica, with $24 million, El Salvador, with $16 million and Nicaragua, with $3 million.
For the year in question, Costa Rica was the only market in which imports increased, reporting a year-on-year variation of 54%.
In the cases of Honduras, El Salvador and Panama, the drops were 26%, 20% and 2%, respectively. Guatemala reduced its foreign purchases by 20% and Nicaragua's imports decreased by 25%.
Regional Business on the Decline
By 2020, the value of beer imports in Central America decreased 13% in year-on-year terms, going from $233 million in 2019 to $203 million in 2020.
In 2020, regional purchases from Mexico increased by 1% and from the U.S. by 3%.
Main Sellers
In 2020, 45% of the value purchased by Central America came from Mexico, 37% from the U.S., 3% from Belgium, 3% from Costa Rica, 2% from Guatemala, 2% from Nicaragua and 2% from Spain.
Mexico is the market of origin of imports that has grown the most for the year in question in recent years, since in 2013 it represented 24% of total purchases and in 2020 it grew to 45%.
