This page gives technical instructions for sharing or taking source metadata from Wikidata.

Sharing metadata

Uploading data sets

The general process is as follows:

1. Have source citation data to share
   1. Check whether a Wikidata item for the source exists
      1. If it exists use it
      2. Otherwise create it
2. Create a Wikidata item for the publication
   1. Create a new Wikidata item
   2. Choose the matching data model
   3. Add citation data to that Wikidata item as Wikidata statements conforming to the data model
3. Disambiguate authors
   1. Check whether a Wikidata item for the author exists
      1. If it exists use it
      2. Otherwise create it
   2. Associate the Wikidata item for the author with the author name in the source item
4. Enhance the citation
   1. add main subject
   2. develop author biodata

Upon mastering the general process consider automating all these things.

1. Upload some practice data
2. Get feedback
3. Automate repeated upload
