Library Publishing Documentation Toolkit

Library Publishing Documentation ToolkitFebruary was Documentation Month at LPC! In addition to holding weekly community calls during the month, members of LPC's Professional Development Committee created the Library Publishing Documentation Toolkit, consisting of four sections: Getting started with documentation, Planning a documentation day, Suggested documentation projects to tackle, and Sharing documentation beyond your institution. The toolkit supports the library publishing community in creating documentation and is available in PDF and as a Google doc. Happy documenting!

Library Publishing Workflows: Project Updates
Library Publishing Workflows. Logos for Educopia Institute, Library Publishing Coalition, and Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Library Publishing Workflows team had a busy winter!

In early March, we wrapped up our second round of interviews with our library publishing partners. Since we've been getting lots of information about each workflow through cycles of revision, we decided to have group interviews, where our partners would share and discuss their workflows in groups of three. We had some really great conversations in those groups, and we were able to dig quite a bit deeper into some of the reasons why each library is doing their work the way they are!

Project Manager Brandon Locke participated in the NISO Plus 2021 panel, "Libraries and the importance of infrastructure," alongside Jody Bailey (Emory University), Michelle Urberg (Maverick Publishing), and Christopher Spalding (EBSCO). Brandon discussed the state of library publishing infrastructure, including the great diversity of tools and platforms used by participants in LPW, and the pain points, gaps, and sustainability concerns they encounter.

Brandon also hosted one of the LPC's Documentation Month calls in February, where he shared some of the methodology behind LPW's approach to documentation and discussed the process with LPC's members. Following the call, he also published a blog post on workflow diagram software.

We have brought on Matt Ruen to conduct an external evaluation of the project thus far. As an evaluator, Matt will ensure that the project is on track to meet the expectations of the grant proposal, and provide additional feedback on potential gaps and opportunities on the project. Matt is the Scholarly Communications Outreach Coordinator at Grand Valley State University, and has been an active member of the LPC for several years.

Library Publishing Workflows is an IMLS-funded project to investigate, synchronize, and model a range of library publishing workflows. Library Publishing Coalition and Educopia Institute are working with 12 partner libraries to document these processes, with the goal of increasing the capacity of libraries to publish open access, peer-reviewed, scholarly journals.
