BLACKPINK’s ‘Boombayah’ reaches 1 billion views on YouTube, group’s third MV to achieve feat


Iconic K-pop girl group BLACKPINK set a new record when their “Boombayah” music video garnered one billion views on YouTube today, Oct. 13. 

“Boombayah” is BLACKPINK’s debut song along with “Whistle” released on Aug. 8, 2016 under their debut single album “Square One.” 

The music videos for “Boombayah” and “Whistle” were both released on Aug. 8, 2016 on YouTube. “Boombayah” set the one-billion views milestone in four years and two months. “Whistle” has 563 million views as of writing.

Fans celebrated the feat by trending the hashtags #BOOMBAYAH_1BILLION and #BLACKPINK3rdBillion on Twitter. 

“Boombayah” is BLACKPINK’s third music video to reach one billion views on YouTube after “Kill This Love” and “DDU-DU DDU-DU.” 

The “Kill This Love” music video reached 1 billion views last Sept. 2, or nearly 17 months it was released on YouTube on April 4, 2019. 

BLACKPINK became the first K-pop group to achieve one billion views for a single music video on YouTube when “DDU-DU DDU-DU” reached the mark on Nov. 11, 2019, or nearly 17 months after it was uploaded on June 15, 2018. 

Their latest music video “Lovesick Girls,” the main track of their debut studio album “The Album,” was released on Oct. 2 and it garnered 61.4 million views in the first 24 hours upon release to become the sixth biggest 24-hour music video debut on YouTube of all time,  YouTube told Manila Bulletin Entertainment last Oct. 6.   

They hold the distinction of being the second most subscribed artist on YouTube with 50.9 million subscribers as of writing after Justin Bieber. As such, BLACKPINK is the No. 1 most subscribed female artist, music group and K-pop artist in the world on YouTube.
