Family Medicine at Memorial Hospital in Jasper

The Indiana University School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency at Memorial Hospital is a collaboration between IU School of Medicine, the sponsoring institution and Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper, Indiana, the hosting organization. As a result of this partnership, this program offers the academic resources and conventions of a large, renowned academic center along with the high standards and traditions of a faith-based community hospital setting.

This program is an unopposed family medicine residency, accredited through ACGME, and it receives support from the Southwestern Indiana Graduate Medical Education Consortium and IU School of Medicine—Evansville campus.

Education Objectives

This program shapes young physicians to become the best family medicine physicians they can be. The faculty and staff at IU School of Medicine accomplish this by going beyond teaching physicians to be competent through the ACGME milestones of family medicine, as exemplified through the program aims:

  • To train residents to practice the full scope and breadth of family medicine in a community hospital setting.
  • To prepare residents to recognize and meet the needs of rural and underserved patients with a focus on social determinants of health.
  • To develop residents into physicians who deliver high quality care with compassion, empathy, and respect for others.
  • To produce residents who find value in practicing medicine with collaboration among the full healthcare team.
  • To instill in residents the importance of life-long learning, process improvement, and scholarly activity in the practice of medicine

Clinical Facilities

A new facility houses the IU School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency at Memorial Hospital in Jasper. Located two blocks from Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, the nearly 16,000 square foot clinic features 12 exam rooms, two treatment rooms, lab services and ample room for resident learning.

Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center, sponsored by the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary, offers a comprehensive range of acute medical services in a modern 137-bed facility. Over the past 65 years, Memorial Hospital has grown to include more than 30 specialties with approximately 100 Active Medical Staff in 33 health care centers in seven counties. The providers, staff and volunteers at Memorial Hospital focus on quality, safety and compassionate patient care, for which they continue to earn national recognition.

As part of the Southwestern Indiana GME Consortium, IU School of Medicine Family Medicine residents have additional opportunities for clinical experiences at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes and Deaconess Hospital and St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville.

Compensation and Benefits

In addition to IU School of Medicine’s competitive stipends, PGY-1 trainees in the Jasper program receive a $10,000 educational stipend; PGY2 and PGY-3 residents receive a $5,000 educational stipend. All residents receive 28 paid vacation/sick days and five paid continuing education/conference days each year of training

Other benefits of the IU School of Medicine Family Medicine Residency at Memorial Hospital include: State of Indiana licensing fees; AAFP membership dues; malpractice insurance; medical/dental insurance plans; disability and life insurance; ABFM/AOBFP certification exam fee; USMLE or COMLEX Step 3 registration fee; BLS, ACLS, NRP, Advanced Life Support for Obstetrics (ALSO), and PALS courses; online access to medical education resources; free parking; and two free personalized lab coats. Free meals and scrubs are provided while on-call.
