Goals and measures of success edit
Project goal edit
- The aim of this project is to increase Wikipedia coverage of iconic buildings around Johannesburg with historic and heritage importance. Building on successes of Joburgpedia Pilot. This grant application is to cover outreach activities around the second phase of Joburgpedia. We want to encourage citizens of this Metropolis to contribute content about the selected heritage sites in Wikipedia project of their choice. We want to build on ties made and process the donation of archives onto Wikipedia and Commons in an organized manner.
Measures of success edit
We will consider this project a success if we can:
- Increase the number of quality articles about heritage sites in and around Johannesburg on English Wikipedia by at least 20 new quality articles related to identified sites.
- Create new quality articles about heritage sites in and around Johannesburg on small South African language Wikipedias.
- Encourage additional local Wikimedians to join the Wikimedia ZA chapter and get involved in this outreach project. At least have 5 menbers who join.
- Activate City of Johannesburg and The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation to donate low resolution media files on selected heritage site onto Commons under free license.
- Digitization of Historical archives to illustrate Wikipedia articles. At least 250 historial photos and documents.
- Activate Johannesburg heritage enthusiasts to contribute onto Wikipedia projects, especially small languages Wikipedias.
- 1000 Articles (New articles and translated combined across language projects)
- 20 Active users combined across small local language wikis. ie four on each.
Project scope and activities edit
- This pilot project encompasses the following selected and endorsed sites that have received QR coded plaques :
- Satyagraha House (Gandi House), Orchards
- Rahima Moosa House, New Clare
- The Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Joubert Park
- Friedenskirche German Lutheran Church, Hillbrow
- Fordsburg Square ( 1922 Rand Revolt Battle Site )
- David Webster House, Troyville
- The Desmond Tutu House, Orlando West, Soweto
- Orlando Stadium, Orlando East, Soweto
- Orlando East public Library, Soweto
- James Mpanza House, Orlando East, Soweto
- Meadowlands High School (June 16 Site), Soweto
This project will be implemented between March and July 2014 and will consist of five Edit-A-Thons arranged once a month in and around Johannesburg. The outreach events will be as follows:
Event No. 1: Edit-A-Thon and Kick Off Meeting (Mar-2014) edit
- The launch of this second phase will be held in Johannesburg (Negotiating for CoJ's Civic Centre) during the last week of March. This event will be used as a launch and kick-off meeting for all stake holders. An Edit-A-Thon session will be held.
Event No. 2: Edit-A-Thon ( Apr-2014) edit
- This Edit-a-Thon will be organised at David Webster House in Johannesburg. This event will attempt to focus youth participation in creating quality Wikipedia articles in native languages.
Event No. 3: Edit-A-Thon (May-2014) edit
- This Edit-a-Thon will be organised at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in the Johannesburg CBD. This event will focus on heritage enthusiasts and how they can assist Wikipedia by contributing specials knowledge and research.
Event No. 4: Edit-A-Thon (Jun-2014) edit
- This event will bring Joburgpedia back to Soweto at Desmond Tutu House. This event will be be used to hopefully launch a Soweto Wikipedia Club.
Event No. 5: Edit-A-Thon (Jul-2014) edit
- This Edit-a-Thon will be organised at Rahima Moosa House. This event will focus on getting women involved in editing and using Wikipedia.
Writing Contest edit
- The idea of a writing contest is to get the public involved in writing and translation efforts. The contest is planned as follows:
- Duration of writing contest will be 2 months between May and June 2014.
- Scope of writing will be JHB heritage article in English or Local languages. As well as Translation rally in local languages.
- There will be 4 judges (CoJ, JHF, HP and Heritage Expert) who will judge submitted articles/translations for quality and completeness.
- Competition will be open to the public residing in Gauteng, including schools entering as teams.
Wikipedian in Residence edit
- One of the outcomes from Joburgpedia-Pilot project was a number of institutions willing to donate historical photographs of Johanesburg. We were not able to pursue this or build better relationships with any of the concerned institutions due to lack of manpower. We have included two items for this phase II:
- Wikipedian in Residence
- Digitization allowance
- The wikipedian in residence will work with the following institutions who have expressed interest in donating media to Joburgpedia;
- Museum Africa in conjunction with University of Witwatersrand
- The Johannesburg Heritage foundation in conjunction with The Heritage portal
- We are also in talks with the National Archives to establish links and gain access to Johannesburg archives repositories.

This project meets a number of mission targets for Wikimedia strategic plan (through 2015). They are outlined below:
Increasing reach edit
Increasing Wikimedia's reach in the Global South is one of the salient points of Vision 2015. South Africa is crucial to this objective, as a key African hub. This project is highly anticipated and has already received a fair amount of attention in Johannesburg.
Participation edit
The potential of this project to increase participation is daunting. Extensive focus will be put into creating lasting contacts with this who attend our Edit-A-Thon days.
Quality edit
Wikimedia Commons still has a very poor representation of Johannesburg heritage sites. The available images are of moderate to acceptable quality. This project aims to improve the coverage of the Johannesburg heritage sites on commons and Wikipedia projects especially small languages.
Credibility edit
The involvement of local authoritities, heritage societies as partners we will be able to improve our credibility as a chapter and movement in handling such important issues as heritage and historical sites documentation.
