Global unblock for 84.25.0.0/16

Status:    Done

Trigger: OTRS 2012120310012749. Further investigation:

  • Reason for global block: only one IP 84.25.68.107
  • Properties of range: In use by large ISP in NL for customer internet connections. Range is semi-static (though RevDNS wrongly may suggest it's dynamic). The x.x.x.107 appears in my proxy database, added 23-11-2012 as a webproxy. Further digging in my database learned me that this IP is still a webproxy, most likely run by a private person.
  • To globally block an entire /16 range for this, imho is a bit over the top. - RonaldB (talk) 23:22, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

This IP address is not an open proxy. It belongs to the paid VPN service Private Internet Access. I use this VPN regularly on public wifi networks to encrypt my network traffic. --Stephen Gilbert (talk) 03:52, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

I am not inclined to unblock, while you may be accurate that it is not an open proxy, it is webserver, and the indication from the blocking steward is that the IP range has been problematic, presumably home for spambots. There are means to edit that are not through a VPN, or you can apply for IP block exemption and explain to us why this is required. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:31, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Got the following message:

Editing from your IP address (208.100.40.43) has been blocked (disabled) on all Wikimedia wikis until 06:25, September 6, 2017 by Vituzzu (meta.wikimedia.org) for the following reason:
Open proxy: hosting on steadfast.net

Not even sure how this is happening since I edited from this computer last Thursday. However, I see a lot of disputes about blocking by this Wikimedia 'bureaucrat' on their discussion page going back at least a year. --208.100.40.43 23:26, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

Both are open proxies, and the 2nd one recently was used by a cross-wiki LTA. The second is blocked already but both should have long open-proxy blocks. These are definitely proxies because they come from a webhost, various ports are open and various web services (including database) are running, and these are publicly accessible ([2] and [3]; note that the brackets are intentional).--Jasper Deng (talk) 20:29, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

I primarily edit on EN:WP, and have encountered global blocks when I edit though Amazon's Web service. I asked an admin on ENWP (privately) to unblock me from ENWP, but he said that I should ask a steward. I rarely edit cross-wiki from Amazon's service, but I may do so if the need arises. - BilCat (talk) 03:19, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

I'm no steward, but I suggest you consider requesting Global IP block exemption on SRGP. Technical note: you're asking for a global unblock, not a global unlock: locks are for accounts, global blocks are for IPs. πr2 (tc) 03:23, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Then I'm totally confused :) Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 03:28, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
I've asked there now. This can be removed/archived. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 03:41, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Not done, withdrawn. Globally, we block IP addresses, whereas we lock accounts. A global lock is infinite and stops access to all components of an account (no login), whereas a block will allow a login and can allow a range of functionality within an account, and more control over actions and conditions of a block, including duration. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:57, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Global lock for Translation Notification Bot

Status:    Not done
  • Translation Notification Bot
  • Some changes in the job queue, unrelated to the Translation Notification extension, broke it: bugzilla:42715. Translation administrators shouldn't use the feature before the bug is fixed, but a temporary lock may help: it won't stop emails, but perhaps it will stop edits on other wikis. (No dev is working on fixing the job queue, so we need a workaround.) Thanks, Nemo 10:20, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

User comment: The person behind the user name Google9999 has a long history of getting blocked, not only on his/her main WP, the English language one, but also on a number of foreign language WPs, and then making all kinds of promises in order to get unblocked, only to break the promises as soon as he has been unblocked. He/she has also been blocked indefinitely under various other aliases, including Google6666, for doing the exact same things as he has done under his newer alias, Google9999. So IMHO he has caused enough havoc on WP to merit being locked/blocked for ever. Thomas.W (talk) 13:25, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Additional comment: Reading his motivation for an unlock also makes me believe that it is a case of lack of competence [4]. Thomas.W (talk) 19:17, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
