Logo discussions & votes

  • Logo (current logos, guidelines, localisation)

We've got our winning logo! Please help us to find a suitable colour. The current one (blue) is already used for other logos of sisterprojects.

Please upload new images with a resolution of 1000×900px (like the original [3]). You can also upload a smaller version for preview, but then you must be able to upload a full resolution later.

It is recommend to upload a vector-format (".svg"), so other users can change it easier.

(Note: If you see the blue logo linked above only in a size smaller than 1000×900px, try opening my preferences, click on the "Files" tab, and increase the value "Limit images on image description pages to" to "1280×1024px". You need a Commons user account in order to perform this action.)

Proceedings

(moved from Discussion on the logo votes) --Snorky 12:37, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think we should first decide on a colour for the Wikiversity logo, since it is monocoloured (and as such easy to decide, I think) and Wikiversity currently hasn't got any official logo.

Feel free to propose new, non-blue variants of the university building here! —Nightstallion (?) 01:40, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've played around with the colors a bit, and am listing them up below. Note that it is in PNG, as my Inkscape failed to open the original SVG for some strange reason... Color conversion done with GraphicConverter.--朝彦 (Asahiko) 11:30, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--朝彦 (Asahiko) 11:30, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like the second, GreenDark, most of the above. I was also thinking about a wine-red one, but am lost with The Gimp. I mean, something between maroon, burgundy and sangria (see here). Hardern 17:23, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Matter of fact, I felt that way too. It's got deepness and is the chicest. I first felt that sepia colors would add some kind of dignity, but I guess that doesn't work for this simple and symbolic design. (And come to think of it, it may not go well with the "open atmosphere" of Wiki.) --朝彦 (Asahiko) 17:37, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What's wrong with blue?--HereToHelp (talk) 00:36, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It looks too similar to other Wikimedia projects, and in the end this would make Wikiversity indistinguishable from them. Hardern 10:31, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
My opinion is that the green dark is the best. But now the Wikibooks logo isn´nt blue anymore so what logo is the blue like?--Tigru 12:33, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That would best be visible here. Hardern 12:44, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's a different shade of blue, though. Won't we eventually run out of colors if we're that picky about it? 69.204.114.198 15:40, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Even if it might be so, we can still experiment with the colors and see if we can come up of something good enough! I'm having fun so let me play ;-) --朝彦 (Asahiko) 16:03, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd root for #5, the orange is very nice, but perhaps similar to the UVA logo--216.15.34.115 03:31, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like #6 InvSepiaLight, but I will decide my final opinion later --Snorky 13:04, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I got my Inkscape working now! Now I can upload them in SVG, and try much more possibilities! (For all of you Mac users out there, the latest version 0.44 won't open SVG. Try downloading version 0.43.4 from their sourceforge site.)

Feel free to suggest other color variations! --朝彦 (Asahiko) 13:12, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

... in response to an opinion favoring InvSepiaLight. I think I made it better. (I've now changed my mind about reversing gradations.) Should we make the color gradation more prominent or not? --朝彦 (Asahiko) 13:27, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hui, couldn't we take all colours? Or a flexible logo, which changes every day? :-) --Snorky 13:31, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I like the green SVG and the lighter red SVG; violet and the darker red are too dark for me. —Nightstallion (?) 15:25, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My display shows up very brightly, so maybe I might have made it too dark for other people. I'll check the colors on a different machine when I have a chance. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 15:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From my school's PC: Just as I thought. I've made them darker than my intention. (I've gotta check my display settings..) New version of violet below.

--朝彦 (Asahiko) 02:22, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now I am really lost, thank you ;) ! I find myself uncapable of deciding whether the GreenDark, HardernRed1 (thanks for the credit:) or maybe even Violet(1) is the best. hrmm. But these are the two (three...) I would prefer. Hardern 08:14, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I also like all of them... What do we do now? —Nightstallion (?) 21:23, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
/me likes #8 HardernRed1 best. The color is similar to that of the Wikimedia-logo. And in my opinion it harmonizes very well with the logos of the other projects. We should ask Elian how to proceed. --Frank Schulenburg 08:22, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
/me likes the dark red one most, too. How to proceed? Testing how the colors look together. --Elian 10:00, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nice and useful template you made! I tried it out on all of them here. Together with the other logos, the dark sepia ones certainly look out of place. I think we can eliminate them if there are no objections. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 11:35, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I also like dark red best - but, in response to Nightstallion's and Elian's questions, it seems the only thing to do is to have one final vote on the colour options. I think forcing people to choose one preferred option would be best, as it would eliminate a potential further vote-off between two close contenders if we went for approval voting. Cormaggio @ 11:12, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We definitely need more to come to the process. And yes, another round of voting might be the best way to get many people involved, and since colors are more a matter of simple preference than the shape designs... --朝彦 (Asahiko) 11:45, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
However, I'm not sure that we are prohibited from using any shade of blue (blue is, after all, the colour associated with "wisdom"). Here's one I made earlier... Cormaggio @ 11:41, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be fair enough if the creator(s) decided on what they think are the best three logos, and then we'll simply hold another round of voting -- though the same will also have to happen to the Wikibooks logo, so before starting another post-final round of voting I'd like official proposals for colour changes from you for Wikibooks *and* Wikiversity. Would that be possible? —Nightstallion (?) 14:48, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You've lost me there - what does this have to do with the Wikibooks logo contest? Cormaggio @ 17:13, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I guess, we're going to change the colors of Wikibooks too, and we'll probably have to vote on that too, so Nightstallion is saying that it'd be better to do it together, right? As for the wikibooks logo, Nightstallion, I'm going to be fairly busy from now until end of this month so I might not be posting anything other than what I have already done. Silly to say this after flooding here with so many variants though. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 17:34, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thanks for all the work you've done so far :-). But I still don't see how we can somehow combine the Wikibooks and Wikiversity logo contests. For a start Wikibooks' winning logo isn't monochrome, so it isn't as if they will be simply saying "pink', while we cry for "turquoise". And just to spice things up, I'm adding another slightly more colourful version below. :-) Cormaggio @ 17:56, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
We want to combine them because we don't want to have to call the Wikimedia public for *TWO MORE* votes; having to call them for one more vote is already bad enough in my book... —Nightstallion (?) 19:06, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
And for my best three, I'd choose HardernRed1, GreenDark, and Violet2. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 10:11, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Support Support; For me #11 looks best! --Knabbe 08:46, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your feedback, but please do not start "{{support}}" voting yet, as there is a possibility that the discussion might wander off into a simple popularity contest if we start putting votes up. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 16:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As I commented during the voting, it would be nice if the pillars were a different color than the globe. Why not keep the original blue coloring for the globe (because that's the color traditionally associated with the planet Earth) and change the color of the pillars? I suggest silver:

David Levy 21:14, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can't decide anymore – maybe we can use the variations that don't get chosen as the logos for each department at Wikiversity. After all, the shape seems to be what makes this logo recognizable, not the color. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 23:48, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blue and silver looks like a good idea. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 10:30, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Despite these being my own university's colors, I have to strike it down. The idea I presume is a rotunda building, such as those found on numerous campus, where the earth is the dome, and this design pushes away from that idea, suggesting a building with a globe behind it.--216.15.34.115 03:31, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I interpret the logo as a combination of two separate entities: a globe representing the planet Earth and a building representing Wikiversity (together signifying the site's global nature). —David Levy 04:07, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mine would be slightly different, in so far as the "building" (or learning space) is topped, not by a roof, but by the world, indicating that it is a path towards global knowledge. :-) Cormaggio @ 11:15, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

--朝彦 (Asahiko) 10:30, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think it would be problematic (and possibly prohibited) to have different coloured logos for different departments of Wikiversity - it may go against the whole Wikimedia visual identity guidelines (though I'm still not sure). Also, as highlighted on Discussion on the logo votes#What now?, we probably have to give up on blue altogether - much as it pains me to do so. Cormaggio @ 12:05, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if we should give up blue all together, Cormaggio, although I understand Elian's points at the other page. The designer's hard time when making publication materials notwithstanding, the most important matter to keep in mind is how the logo looks at the top-left (or occasionally top-right) corner of the site, as it is where the logo is going to be viewed the most. If blue turns out to be the best option, let it be blue. (but if there are other options that is as good, we'd better take that one.) --朝彦 (Asahiko) 15:46, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I really don't think that we have to eliminate blue altogether. We merely have to ensure that the logo isn't entirely or predominantly blue. The globe is the smaller of the two components, so I see no problem with leaving it blue (provided that a different color is selected for the pillars). In fact, it doesn't make sense to me for the globe to be any color other than blue (which is traditionally associated with the planet Earth), and I suspect that significantly fewer people would have supported this logo's adoption if they'd thought that such a change was planned. —David Levy 16:34, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
To me only #1 GreenLight is acceptable (if it must not be blue) — (beyond the fact that a logo resembling a sound building is imho extremely easily misinterpreted or misunderstood when attached to a purely virtual thing) --Purodha Blissenbach 02:10, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Remember that you can have one logo for the site (e.g. Blue and Silver) and then a monochrome logo for printed documents, like Wikimedia already has in their identity guidelines. Titoxd(?!?) 20:25, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My girlfriend, Talvikki, a designer, and who designed one of the earlier logo contenders, pointed out that the majority of logos are blue - it's generally a "safe" colour. She suggests that Wikiversity's logo should be warm or bright-coloured, indicating the sparkle of learning. What about, like in her entry, a good strong orange, maybe with a bright blue for the globe? Cormaggio @ 11:15, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nice idea, why not try it out and publish the result here? Hardern 11:40, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, this is as good as I can do for now - please continue.. (also needs vectorising) Cormaggio @ 13:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I prefer the text in light blue (#15.4) - it's tied together better, and the colours complement eachother without distracting the eye from individual components of the logo. What do others think? Cormaggio @ 11:15, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now we've got enough logos for conducting at least two more rounds of voting. Since everybody agrees that's not a good idea, I suggest we do a quick informal vote here on which three or four color options we would like to get an election about, and then start it? Or are there any other ideas about how to proceed? At the moment, the process seems to me to be stuck, so suggestions welcome. Hardern 10:09, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
