Friday Spill: Charles Addams Syndicated Panels Unearthed!
September 24, 2021

Every so often something turns up here at the Spill that makes me wonder What Else Is Out There?…Yesterday the editor in chief of Comics DC, Mike Rhode emailed me asking if I was aware of the Charles Addams syndicated strip, Out of This World, and he sent along this panel:

The answer was no, I wasn’t aware of it; did not remember ever hearing of it, reading about it. Mr. Rhode learned of the panels from Bruce Rosenberger, a “Stripper” [common usage for someone engaged in some fashion in/with the comic strip world] who sends out a daily comic (DailyDoseComics). Mr. Rosenberg has informed me that he believes the strip ran from 1956-1957. Here’s the “Out of This World” entry from comic book historian, Allan Holtz‘s Index (Mr. Holtz runs the very thorough Stripper’s Guide blog):

Just so we are all on the same page, these two cartoons by Charles Addams are among 65 such works published in newspapers owned by the Bell-McClure/Nana Syndicate from 1955-1957. Many of the original cartoons are still owned by the Tee and Charles Addams Foundation and are often part of their worldwide exhibitions of his work. In fact, the above cartoon captioned, “It does give him a certain incentive,” will appear in the Addams exhibition at the Rialto Theatre in Westfield, New Jersey as part of the Town’s annual AddamsFest for the month of October 2021.
