The Viennese Connection: Alfred Schutz and the Austrian School

In the following I shall try, first, to briefly introduce the two interpretations of Schutz’s relationship with the Austrians, and second, to cast new and more detailed light upon some aspects of the relationship and to do so by drawing upon a large number of previously unknown or neglected materials, which may seriously challenge the standard picture of Schutz’s relation to the Austrians. Having done so, I shall offer some conjectures for why this redrawn picture of the personal relationship may enlighten our understanding of the intellectual relationship.
