Liberty leaving Madison Square Garden, re-sign two free agents

The Liberty are bringing back two familiar faces as they move to a new home court.

The team re-signed Long Island native and restricted free agent Bria Hartley and Kia Vaughn of The Bronx, an unrestricted free agent, the team announced Friday.

The two rejoin a club that is moving its home games to the Westchester County Center in White Plains for the 2018 season, except for two games that will be played at Madison Square Garden. The Westchester Knicks of the G League also play their home games at the County Center. Madison Square Garden Company, which made the move official Thursday, will continue to run the Liberty while it searches for owners for the franchise.

“While MSG remains committed to finding a new owner for the Liberty, the Company is focused on supporting the team’s long-term success in New York,” Liberty president Isiah Thomas said in a statement. “MSG has had a very positive experience at the Westchester County Center and believes it is a venue where the Liberty can extend our fan base while maintaining our roots at The Garden.”

This is not the first time the Liberty was moved out of the Garden. During the 2011-13 seasons, Prudential Center in Newark served as the team’s home court because of renovation to the Garden. First-year head coach Katie Smith and the Liberty will open the season May 20 at the Chicago Sky, with their first home game in White Plains coming on May 25 versus the Minnesota Lynx.
