Description

Preamble

In order to have less technology using third-party services it would be interesting to allow users of Italian-language Wikipedia not to use Telegram but to use Mattermost.

Personally I've nothing against Telegram because I use the Telegram FOSS version that is 100% free software from my client-side and that's enough for me. Anyway at present our Mattermost installation presents some added value.

Obviously the Mattermost cons is that it's deserted. A nice way to isolate yourself in freedom.

Proposed solution

We would like to bidirectionally bridge a public Telegram group and our freshly created public Mattermost channel.

On Mattermost: #italian-wikipedia (named after #english-wikipedia)
On Telegram: @itwikipedia

NOTE: At the time of writing IRC should NOT be taken into consideration because the majority of our IRC guys does not want any kind of public logging and we should respect their opinion.

@valerio.bozzolan my apologies for not responding to this sooner. I apparently forgot to 'watch' this project.

I see multiple tokens awarded here, but I need someone to step up and say that this has been discussed in the community and has consensus support there. I'm happy to work on the bot side, but need some cover from an active community member to take the blame if it turns out that folks do not like the bridge.

While y'all get that figured out I will research what is needed to register and add the bot on the Mattermost side. This will be the first Mattermost integration which is kind of humorous because the FOSS software powering the bot is "matterbridge". :)
