The Islamist Phoenix reads like an outgrowth of periodical pieces, hence there is a steady redundancy from chapter to chapter. The ideas are forwarded clearly and without the baggage of bias(well, until later, as you'll see). The phoenix of the title refers how Salafism has responded to the various conflicts of the last 15 years and re-imagined itself presently as a tech savvy Islamic State, eager to conduct the business of state while maintaining a diet of terror for its opponents. The late Al Qaeda leader in Iraq al Zarqawi appears to have been crucial in this turn of events, while the US was painting Sadr City as the inner circle of Hell. The missed opportunites and opinions of the West is a recurring thene in the Napoleoni's analysis. The Islamic concept of takfir refers to apostasy or heresy is readily bandied back and forth between Sunnis and Shia. It gives a free hand to what many perceive as the barbarism of ISIL. It was at this point of the discussion that term genocide and the name Hitler appeared. I had to wince.

Napoleoni offers no easy solutions. The current proxy conflicts being waged against both IS as well Assad's Syrian government are also grossly counter-productive. This only appears to lead to further regional destabilization. 2.5 stars. ( )

En El fénix islamista Loretta Napoleoni, especialista en terrorismo de fama internacional, demuestra que a pesar de que los medios occidentales nos dan una imagen devaluada del Estado Islámico, casi como una banda de matones con una racha de victorias, el auténtico planteamiento de la organización es un nuevo modelo de nacionalismo.

“ken uw vijand” is wellicht het belangrijkste devies in elk conflict, dus ook in een oorlog. Napoleoni heeft dat zeker ter harte genomen. Zij kijkt voortdurend voorbij de clichés en de oppervlakkige weetjes en indrukken die bij ons over Islamitische Staat bestaan. Ze wijst op de historische wortels van de beweging, de krachtige symboliek die uitgaat van de heroprichting van het kalifaat en de algemene frustratie onder Arabische (en westerse) moslims die de voedingsbodem is van het succes van IS. En ze beklemtoont het heel eigen karakter van de organisatie, namelijk de ambitie om een moderne staat te stichten; volgens haar is het zelfs de eerste terreurbeweging die daar mogelijk in zal slagen.
Het is knap dat Napoleoni ons de ogen voor een aantal van die dingen opent. Maar er zit ook een keerzijde aan: af en toe is ze zo ijverig in het relativeren van onze existentiële angst voor IS dat het bijna op een rechtvaardiging van de barbaarse daden lijkt. Ook de bronnen waar ze zich op beroept om te bewijzen dat zulke barbarijen ook in andere recente conflicten zijn gebeurd (oa Kosovo) zijn op zijn minst mager en zelfs dubieus te noemen. En tenslotte lijkt ze me wel heel voortvarend in haar inschatting dat IS echt wel op weg is een moderne staat te worden, die misschien over afzienbare tijd diplomatiek salonfähig zal worden.
Kortom: aanbevolen lectuur, maar toch kritisch blijven! ( )
