FINDING BOOKS, JOURNALS AND MORE IN THE LIBRARY

Use the catalogue to search for books, journals, theses, films etc. at the University of Warwick library.

  • Use the Location and Classmark displays to determine where in the Library an item is located, at what classmark it is shelved, what type of loan type and whether it is available.
    Item display example
  • Available items are checked out using self-issue machines and returned at the two return machines on Floor 1 of the main library.

STATUS tells you if the book is available or checked out. eg.:

DUE + date the item is checked out until this date
AVAILABLE the book can be checked out
LIB USE ONLY the book may only be used in the library
ON HOLDSHELF the item is on hold for another patron
  • Connect to online resources such as e-journals and e-books via the links provided in the full catalogue record. eg.

journal link example

  • Access full-text journal articles that the Library holds or has online access to by searching for the title of the journal (eg. journal of algebra). If the Library does not hold a print journal or subscribe to e-journal content then Warwick staff and students may use the Library's Document Supply service to obtain photocopies of articles. To discover journal articles directly you need to search Encore, Google Scholar or individual databases.

QR CODES

While using the Library catalogue, you may come across images like this -->qr code example

This is a QR code (short for Quick Response). Every record in the catalogue has one; photographing it with your smartphone will open up the item's record page on your phone, so you won't have to write down the location and classmark. Your QR reader will save these scanned records giving you a record of these items on your smartphone.

Not all smartphones have native support for scanning QR codes, but most phones have app options which can be easily installed freely. Search online with the keywords 'QR Code Reader' and the make and model of your phone. Phones running Google Android and modern Nokia handsets have the QR code reader built-in.
Be aware of the charges for downloading data if you are accessing online content through your mobile phone service provider network.

SEARCH TIPS (Keyword)

Multiple Words

The more words you type, the more specific is your search and the fewer hits you will get (System retrieves records that contain all words anywhere in record).

Examples

climate (broad search ~1000 hits)
climate change tourism (specific search ~10 hits)
business research hussey (1 hit - to find a specific known book easily type some words from the title and an author surname)
brand strategy (~50 hits)
brand strateg* (using a word stem broadens out search to ~100 hits)

Phrase Searches

Search for complete phrases by enclosing them in quotation marks. Words enclosed in double quotes will appear together in all results exactly as typed.

Examples

"just in time"
"process improvement"
"a to z of medical writing"

Wildcards

Words may be right-hand truncated using an asterisk * in place of other characters. You may use ? to replace a single character anywhere within a word. Note: the system does not automatically look for plurals so these wildcards can be a useful way of including plurals.

Examples

ethic* (finds ethic, ethics, ethical...)
wom?n (finds woman or women)
environment* polic*

Search Operators (Classic Catalogue only)

The boolean operators 'and', 'or', 'and not' allow you to construct your query and indicate the relationships between your search terms. By default, ie. if you do not use an operator, an 'and'-relationship between the terms is established. Use brackets when you are constucting a complex search.

Examples

stocks or bonds
music and (blues or jazz)
management after cardiac

Field Limits

Field limits allow you to do keyword searching specifically in title, author and subject fields rather than anywhere.

  • a: (Search only author fields) eg. a:greene
  • t: (Search only title fields) eg. t:cities
  • d: (Search only subject fields) eg. d:ecology

You may use Advanced Keyword search as an alternative to typing these field limits.

Location, Material Type and Language Limits

Select these as needed in Advanced Keyword Search or Modify Search. Multiple limits within one box may be selected by holding down the CTRL key as you click (eg. Print material and Video/DVD can both be selected).

Grouping

Keyword search results are grouped by relevance to bring the most likely titles to the top of the list (strongly weighted towards words occurring in the title). Each group represents a similar level of relevance and results are sorted within the group by date or title. If you use boolean operators to form a complex query then the results are not displayed in relevance groups.

Most relevant Most relevant titles

Highly relevant Highly relevant titles

Very relevant Very relevant titles

Relevant Relevant titles

Other relevant Other relevant titles

While keyword results are initially displayed in relevance order by default, you may easily switch to sorting by date or title by using the 'sorted by relevance | date | title' menu at the top of the result set.
