After nearly 70 years as Alcoa Davenport Works, the Riverdale plant soon will become part of a new spin-off company known as Arconic.
On Tuesday, Alcoa announced the new name for what will be its future Value-Add company when the company splits in two later this year.
Alcoa unveiled the name, logo and tagline as "Arconic. Innovation, Engineered." It will include the three business segments that now comprise Alcoa's Value Add portfolio: Global Rolled Products (which includes Davenport Works), Engineered Products and Solutions, and Transportation and Construction Solutions.
The company said the Arconic brand represents the future Value-Add company’s iconic heritage and commitment to industry-shaping innovation:
- The "A" echoes Arconic’s proud Alcoa heritage.
- "Arc" represents the arc of progress and the continued pursuit of advancement for customers, employees, shareholders and communities.
- "-conic" speaks to the company’s history of creating iconic products and its constant focus on the next breakthrough innovation.

The tagline, "Innovation, Engineered," communicates the company’s mission — to invent, develop and deliver products and solutions for high performance customers and industries through precision engineering and advanced manufacturing, Alcoa said.
Alcoa revealed in September that it was splitting the company into two, independent, publicly traded companies. The separation remains on track to be completed in the second half of 2016, the company said Tuesday.
The future Upstream company, which will operate under the Alcoa name, will comprise the five business units that today make up Global Primary Products: Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminum, Cast Products and Energy.
According to Alcoa, the Arconic logo is a two-dimensional icon that the eye sees as a three-dimensional projection, symbolizing Arconic’s ambition and ability to make what is often deemed impossible real. Its silhouette pays homage to the Alcoa mark, while the color represents the company’s vibrant, dynamic culture.
"The Arconic brand fuses our extraordinary heritage with our highly promising future," Alcoa chairman and CEO Klaus Kleinfeld said in a news release. "It echoes our 127-year history of invention — and reinvention."
He added "It reflects our vision of limitless innovation solving complex engineering challenges, to transform the way we fly, drive, build, package and power. And it represents the ingenuity of our people, who are dedicated to inventing, developing, and delivering high-quality, innovative products and solutions..."
In the Quad-Cities,the switch will change the name of one of the area's largest employers.
"We are excited by the launch of new brands that reflect the visions of what will be two leading-edge companies: Alcoa and Arconic," said Rob Woodall, Davenport Works' manufacturing director.
He added that the new brands will began at separation. "And after separation, both companies will remain committed to the traditions that make our employees proud to come to work every day: a laser focus on safety, exceeding customer expectations and being engaged members of the Quad-City community,'' Woodall added.
As part of the company's announcement, it also unveiled a new Alcoa logo for the Upstream company. With the symbol removed from its enclosure, the new bold, geometric capital "A," with the sharp apex signifies an upward tragectory and constant pursuit of strong performance, Alcoa said. It will retain the "Alcoa blue" color.Â
"The new Alcoa mark represents a transformed and agile Upstream company: resilient against market down-swings and poised to capitalize on upswings," Kleinfeld added.
Both Arconic and Alcoa will be Fortune 500 companies, headquartered in the United States. They will be listed on the New York Stock Exchange as ARNC for Arconic and AA for Alcoa.
