Summary The development of the electric streetcar changed urban transportation dramatically, allowing people to live farther away from where they worked. As a result, "streetcar suburbs" cropped up outside of major urban areas. As the 20th century progressed, automobiles replaced streetcars and trains, and people began to move even farther away from urban centers.
