SUMMARY 
The Office of the CIO has responsibility for the Technology Services Group, Broadcast Media & Production Services, and the Project Management Office. Through these groups, the CIO has overall responsibility to develop and support information / communication initiatives for The Mother Church including telecoms, infrastructure, operations, security & compliance, business applications, vendor relationships, media production, and project management. In directing these activities, the CIO calls upon his/her proven practice of Christian Science as well as the application of business acumen and technologies to support organizational goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Develops the technology strategy for the Church Center. Leads the creation of the strategic plan and oversees the development and implementation of operational plans.  
    • Participates in strategic and other planning sessions throughout the organization to ensure that technology strategies support initiatives and directives of the Christian Science Board of Directors (CSBD) and Trustees of The Christian Science Publishing Society (BoT), and that technology is intelligently and consistently applied to enable those initiatives.
    • Partners with senior managers in a co-sponsor role on significant projects with technical components, setting out goals to ensure business and technical strategies and goals are in sync, and providing oversight on project progress.
    • Provides technology leadership to clients as a trusted business partner; participates in product strategy discussions and planning; helps clients understand what is possible; works with clients to enable product strategies and align them with the technology strategy.
    • Develops an IT vision consistent and supportive of CSBD and BoT directions and departmental plans. Communicates that vision to the CSBD, BoT, Coordinating Managers, and CIO groups. Monitors and evolves that vision as organization needs and technologies evolve.
    • Develops near-term (1-3 year) and longer-term (3+ years) technology strategies and plans to support organizational and departmental initiatives. Gains CSBD and BoT approvals. Communicates these plans to the Coordinating Managers and throughout CIO groups. Ensures that operational plans fully support and reflect the strategies.
    • Regularly reviews progress against strategies and plans with the CSBD and BoT. Makes changes and adjustments as needed. Ensures resources continue to be applied to the highest priority projects and initiatives.
    • Provides advice and counsel to senior management regarding technical issues, needs, and strategic requirements. Acts as the “technology conscience” across the organization, ensuring that the technology components of departmental and product decisions are intelligently conceived and applied, are consistent with the overall technology strategy, make the most sense for the long term, and are reliable, secure, and cost effective.
    • Has final sign-off authority on approving all technology products and services acquired by all departments.
  2. Identifies emerging and evolving technologies and related practices (for example, cloud computing and outsourcing) and their potential application to organizational business problems. Encourages further examination of these technologies; ensures that relevant findings are included in organizational strategies and plans as needed.
  3. Identifies risks presented by the Church’s technologies and architectures, and communicates these to the CSBD along with the training and options for reducing those risks. Remains current on world-wide data privacy and security issues and best practices. Has an overall responsibility to protect the information of the Church and its members.
  4. Hires and develops managers to plan and deliver the strategic plan, to handle day-to-day activities, and to implement annual, intermediate, and long-range operational plans and budgets. Works with internal staff, external staff, and vendors to implement these plans.
  5. Develops and maintains service models that successfully and efficiently meet the needs of customers / clients. Reviews these service models regularly to ensure they continue to meet these business needs. Aligns service levels with industry levels as appropriate.

Reporting Relationships
Supervisor:  The Christian Science Board of Directors
Supervises:  The Technology Services Group, Broadcast Media & Production Services, and the Project Management Office.
Regular Contacts
Has direct contact with the Christian Science Board of Directors and Board of Trustees, coordinating / department managers of the Organization, vendors, and key external contacts such as other CIOs and CTOs.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Education / Experience
Job requires College degree or equivalent and specifically 10 plus years management and leadership experience in a technology environment. 
Knowledge / Skills
Must have sound background in the role of technology in an organization.  Needs to have demonstrated expertise and skill in negotiation, interpersonal communication strategy development, organizational and operational planning, and plan implementation.
Technology Skills
Is fully conversant with the technologies relevant to the organization. Is able to examine options and work with technical leads to assess and select those technologies most appropriate for addressing business problems.
 
Work Environment
Regularly attends relevant conferences; frequently visits with vendors to understand capabilities and to build strategic partnerships; may be called upon to evaluate remote data centers and vendor installations.
Engagement with Christian Science
Must be a practicing Christian Scientist, able to engage with others in an utterly Christian manner. Must be an active member of The Mother Church and have had primary class instruction.
