Eggy the Mascot

Eggy the Mascot beat his drum prior to a Rams hockey game

Who is Eggy?

In 1961, four students from the Student Administrative Council bought a ram for twenty-five dollars at the Toronto Stockyards and decorated him with Ryerson pendants and ribbons for a varsity hockey game.  Following Ryerson's triumph over the University of Waterloo, the little ram became a symbol of victory – a symbol that has been cultivated ever since.

Over the years, Ryerson has shaped and molded its pride into the form of Egerton the Ram – a six-foot tall ram packed with energy, enthusiasm, and a love for all things Ryerson.  Through physical transformations and the migration to the Mattamy Athletic Centre, Eggy has persisted as an icon within the Ryerson community, inspiring students and faculty alike to share and honour their Ryerson pride.

Rye Pride

School Spirit may be defined as emotional support for one's educational institution, manifesting itself through the instigation of school colours, cheers, and community involvement.  Ryerson University's sense of school spirit is palpable, as it is encouraged and celebrated throughout all aspects of campus life.  Although intrinsically bound to every aspect of campus life, school pride needs to be supported and fostered, and a mascot is an extremely effective way to do just that.  With an emphasis on Performance, Personality, and Professionalism, Eggy the Ram exemplifies the true Ryerson spirit, reflecting the heart and passion of the student body and faculty through a commitment to optimism, sportsmanship, and the pursuit of excellence through entertainment.
