Shining a light on the weekly Bible Lessons published in the Christian Science Quarterly®

Mind

The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Addressing discord in the Christian community, the writer urges spiritual wisdom as the remedy for “bitter envying and strife” (v. 14, citation 6). His list of wisdom’s characteristics has been compared to Paul’s portrayal of the “fruit of the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22, 23) and guidance about charity (see I Corinthians, chap. 13).

entreated: urgently appealed to
partiality: favoring one thing or person over another
hypocrisy: false appearance of goodness
