"What if you could track public health like the weather?"

In our latest blog post, Stamen designer Caroline Carter talks about our work with WastewaterSCAN to make epidemiological charts more usable in our day-to-day lives, like checking a weather report.

The only people who need to be cautious about #COVID19 infections are the ones who use and value their brains. The rest of you are free to attend all the crowded events and travel maskless on packed planes and trains all you want!

Seriously, if you won't read my posts, then read more of these articles. I truly believe if more of you knew what I do, you'd be making different decisions.

“A new study of almost 1.2 million people in Hong Kong demonstrates the protective effect of COVID-19 vaccination against long COVID, and suggests that the more doses people have had the less likely they experience long-term symptoms related to the virus.” The study was published Feb 26 2024 in Nature.

Today the #USPS announced a new round of free #COVID19 tests. If you've already ordered before (including the most recent round), you can order another round.

Use these rapid antigen tests before attending (or hosting) a gathering or other event; if you test positive, cancel—or wear a good (N95) mask and gather outside if possible.

(Note that your order will ship no earlier than Monday, November 27—*after* Thanksgiving. So too late for Thanksgiving-related testing, but in time for any December gatherings.)

Get your tests today! https://covidtests.gov/

I dedicate this post to everyone who said we just needed to rush to get infected with #COVID19 because “herd immunity” would protect us. STUDY looked at older adults and found that those with an early Omicron infection were 48X MORE LIKELY to get an Omicron infection compared to those who were never previously infected. “Most Omicron reinfections occurred at ∼5 months after the initial infection.” https://www.thelancet.com/journals/eclinm/article/PIIS2589-5370(23)00325-5/fulltext#%20

"People infected multiple times with #COVID19 are more likely to develop long COVID, and most never fully recover from the condition. Those are two of the most striking findings of a comprehensive new 3-year research study of 138,000 veterans."

We've published information on getting free #COVID19 home tests on our blog: https://indivisiblesf.org/blog/2023/10/24/free-covid-19-tests

Four from the USPS, and eight per person reimbursed by your insurance. Get yours today!

The rules for getting free #COVID19 tests via your insurance will change on November 11: https://indivisiblesf.org/blog/2023/10/24/free-covid-19-tests

After that date, you'll have to get your tests from an “in-network” provider. What that means will depend on your insurer.

You have just a few days left to get eight free COVID-19 tests per person in October, and then a week and a half to get eight per person in November before the November 11 rules change.

In the meantime, https://covidtests.gov/ remains open (for now) and does not require insurance.

Well, this sucks.
I was strongly discouraged from getting a booster this year. By a doctor, no less. I got it in Feb anyway. Glad I did.

Now's the time to get free #COVID19 tests.

This week, the USPS and the Biden Administration reopened the ordering website for free COVID-19 home test kits. Use these rapid antigen tests before attending (or hosting) a gathering or other event; if you test positive, cancel, or wear a good (N95) mask and be outside if possible. Order yours today! https://covid.gov/tests

Also, if you're a California resident, you can still get your insurance to reimburse at-home COVID-19 test purchases thanks to SB 510, passed in 2021. This provision lasts until early November, so the window is closing fast—you can purchase up to 8 per person this month and 8 per person next month and get those reimbursed by your insurance. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-02-07/with-covid-emergency-ending-will-i-have-to-pay-for-tests

Know anyone who is still masking or working to avoid covid to some degree? Maybe they feel more isolated or limited socially, and having more social options that match their precautions would help.

There's a free "Covid Conscious" friends and dating match system beginning. Open to all walks of life.

It's launching in Oregon, while also offering to help anyone who wants to start their own local group anywhere else.

A community building niche for people who struggle to find others will do a lot of people some good, please spread the word.

Scientists on Monday published research in the journal Nature that found "clear differences" in the blood of people with long COVID versus those without, a finding that could lead to testing for long COVID.

Here’s how much coronavirus people infected with COVID-19 may exhale

"Based on the new data, the team estimates that a high shedder could potentially exhale enough virus to infect someone in a closed space in about 20 seconds, making even elevator rides risky. With an average shedder, infection could take a little under 4 minutes."

Today's the day! Starting now, you can order four more free #COVID19 test kits from USPS: https://covid.gov/tests

These are rapid antigen tests that you use at home.

If you're uninsured, you can still get your 2023 #COVID19 vaccine for free through the CDC's Bridge Access Program, which runs through December 31, 2024: https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/bridge/

You can find participating locations, including CVS and Walgreens, at https://vaccines.gov/ .

Note: If you encounter pharmacy staff who don't know about the program and try to charge you for the vaccine, you may need to self-advocate. You may need to ask to see the pharmacist, show that Vaccines.gov indicates the location participates in the Bridge Access Program, call Corporate, or all of the above. We encourage you to be respectful but firm.

Update: Some folks are getting cancellation notices from CVS. Apparently they haven't received their supply of 2023 #COVID19 vaccines when they thought they would.

If you haven't gotten such a notice yet, assume your appointment is still valid (though you may want to call ahead on the morning of your appointment, if possible).

If your appointment has been cancelled, you may be able to reschedule through the same pharmacy's website. Or you could try one of their competitors. No update on City sites just yet.

We're all looking forward to being able to renew our protection. Let's be patient until then—and keep up precautions such as masking that keep us from catching this and other viruses in the first place.

Masks work. "Our model quantitatively links mask efficacy to reductions in viral load & subsequent transmission risk. Our results reinforce that the use of masks by both a potential transmitter & exposed person substantially reduces the probability of successful transmission, even if masks only lower exposure viral load by ~50%. Slight increases in mask adherence/efficacy above current levels would reduce the effective reproductive number substantially below 1." #COVID19 https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-91338-5

It’s time. Clean air can keep schools open…

An Italian study of schools estimated that students in classrooms equipped with ventilation systems or devices that deliver clean air had at least a 74%⬇️ risk of infection than those in classes with windows open.

"I've had #COVID19 before, so I have immunity and am protected from bad outcomes from repeat infections, right?"

STUDY: Overall, prior infection was associated with a significant slightly elevated risk of severe disease. As the pandemic proceeded, the effect of prior infection tended to evolve from generally protective during the pre-Omicron era to unprotective during the Omicron era.

As COVID-19 cases rose, so did diabetes — no one knows why.

The spike in childhood type 1 diabetes opened new avenues for researchers to explore the cause of the disease.

"A study of more than 38,000 young people has confirmed what researchers had begun to suspect: the COVID-19 pandemic precipitated a jump in cases of type 1 diabetes in children and teenagers."
