Before we get started I do want to go over the goal of this session. And the goal of this session is to introduce the benefits and the techniques used to create a gale scavenger hunt. A scavenger hunt is really an opportunity to introduce and build knowledge

of your Gale resources maybe showcase ease of use, or highlight content. And we've also created a scavenger hunt template that you will receive at the end of this session today, so wait for that at the end of the session, but the session is guided around

that template, and I'll explain that in some more detail. With that, I have a brief agenda.

And we're going to first and foremost talk about want you to consider and think about to throughout the session, what is the purpose of the scavenger hunt so if you're contemplating I want to write some scavenger hunts for my resources.

Think about what is your purpose I'm going to share some ideas, but what is the purpose of the scavenger hunt, we're going to talk about key objectives to building a scavenger hunt.

And again, these, these are based on the template that we've created for you these key objectives are the approach we use to building a Gale scavenger hunt, and then questions we encourage throughout the session using the q and a box but we will stay

on the line at the end of the session to to answer any questions at the end of the session you will receive a link to the scavenger hunt template, which can be found on the Gale support site, and also where you can go for additional support we have some

folks at Gale that are there to support you in all things Gale.

So let's start talking about building a Gale scavenger hunt. What is the purpose. So I always consider when I, when I'm working on the scavenger hunts and I'm writing them I think there's a term that you're probably familiar with begin with the end in

mind. So think about are you building this scavenger hunt for students so they will learn how to use the database prior to maybe an upcoming research project. is the scavenger hunt a tool for teachers to use with their students at the start of a unit of
[00:02:36.000]
study. or are you creating the scavenger hunt for fun for patrons and students to get them acclimated or used to the resources just for fun. It's also very important, I can't stress this enough, it's very important to keep your intended audience in mind.

So think about who are you writing this scavenger for what level they're at what reading level they're at.
[00:02:59.000]
And also what are you trying to achieve with your scavenger hunt.
[00:03:04.000]
So let's briefly talk about some of these key objectives.
[00:03:09.000]
Introduce Gale resources. This is a great way to use a scavenger hunt should introduce and acclimate your students or patrons to your Gale resources that you have access to you may have access to them through your state you may have access to them through
[00:03:22.000]
your individual site also highlight, ease of use. GALEN context resources and we're focusing on the In Context resources today. Gale In Context resources are very user friendly.

We have topic pages, you have search options like topic finder, tools such as citations, or get link, and also really unique and interactive content. So highlighting that ease of use and also showcasing some content is a great way to use a scavenger hunt,
[00:03:51.000]
or a key objective for a scavenger hunt.
[00:03:55.000]
Using a scavenger hunt to understand the tools and the features so build that understanding scavenger hunts is is a great way to point out some of those tools and features available within your Gale resources.

And then finally we want to build knowledge and critical thinking skills.
[00:04:13.000]
So build user knowledge of how to use the resources, share content that's available develop research skills, and also develop those critical thinking skills.

All great key objectives to building a scavenger hunt.

So before we dive into each of these a little bit deeper and I give you some examples.

I want to start with a topic page so that we're all on the same page. I want to show you a topic page within one of our In Context resources, and you may have access to different In Context resource than the one I'm going to show today, but I am going

to share with you. Gale In Context Opposing Viewpoints and are in a few items I want to point out so that we're all on the same page, all of your In Context resources have fantastic topic pages now we are in opposing viewpoints, which if you're not familiar,

this is our pro con hot social issues resource, and the homepage, as all our homepage is have in your in context, sweet or in context family have topic pages here they're organized by subject category, I can very easily click into health and medicine,
[00:05:29.000]
and there's 100 different topic pages available, or I can go to browse all issues now I'm in Opposing Viewpoints so that's why you're seeing issues if you were in say Gale In context high school or middle school or elementary you're going to see browse
[00:05:46.000]
all topics rather than issues.
[00:05:49.000]
But what's a little unique for this resource it says browse all issues so I can access all of the topic pages at once, do some searching, find topic pages that are maybe I'm a teacher and I'm, I'm kicking off a unit, and I'm looking for a topic page that

I want to build a scavenger hunt around. Now the reason why, and we're going to go to let's actually go into one of these let's go to space exploration,
[00:06:16.000]
our template is built around this idea the first, the directions that are given are to access a topic page. So, showing these topic pages to you so that you're comfortable and understand, and we're all on the same page.

I want to point out a few items, you do have content types and that's here in the center of the page. We have a variety of content types on this topic page, always really helpful if you have a lot of choices available.

So we have some unique ones like infographics we've got great multimedia images and videos reference documents you can see that we have viewpoints which because we're an opposing viewpoints, we have a viewpoints content type, but you may want to use statistics

in your scavenger hunt so these content types are really helpful to guide your users or your students patrons, to the point where they're going to find the article or image that you're referencing in your question, few other tools I just want to point
[00:07:18.000]
out real quick.
[00:07:19.000]
You also have the get link option so get link. What it does is it creates a persistent URL back to any spot within your resource, because as you'll see on the template that you'll receive at the end.

Not only do we ask for the answer but also the source. So get link provides the opportunity to link back to content within the resource or.
[00:07:42.000]
Let me go into an article we're going to go into reference.
[00:07:49.000]
And once that opens. Here we go. Let's click into this first document.

We of course have the citation tool.
[00:07:58.000]
So they can grab the citation and share that with you, or as their source right we want to definitely want to cite the source to the answer to their question, or use the get link.

So just two tools I wanted to point out real quick for you as we are looking at this information. One other area I'm going to point out before we go back to the PowerPoint.

And when you are on a content type you have these this is another tool that you may want to pull into your scavenger hunt filter your results so if you're introducing this you want your students using this resource.

And, and using the tools within filtering your results by subject or document type could be really great to us, or highlight within your scavenger hunt.

Okay, so now that we're all on the same page. Let's go back to that PowerPoint.

Don't forget to ask any questions that you have throughout the session Stacey's monitoring the q and a box. So again, these four key objectives, we're going to now take a look at examples of those key objectives and also some sample questions too, and

then we're going to build our own question. So introduce Gale resources you're introducing you're giving them you're introducing them to a brand new resource maybe or it's a new school year, and they need to refresh.

So, sharing a resource with your students.
[00:09:25.000]
Also the access point how are they accessing the resource and also introducing them to topic pages, highlight, ease of use, there's so many different tools and features within your Gale resources that are make using them so friendly to students of all

ages and patrons to that, it's a great way scavenger hunt is a great way to highlight that ease of use, by using looking at the topic pages or using topic finder, understanding of the tools and features, you have great tools and features within get link
[00:09:59.000]
highlights and notes. This is a great way to build your students knowledge of those tools and features. And then finally, talking about build knowledge build knowledge and critical thinking skills because with your question there following your path,

and then they're doing some reading, they're doing some exploration into the content a little bit deeper and answering those questions.

So let's start with the first one introduce Gale resources. So here's what you'll see this on the template to you want to provide clear directions and we've given you this on the template that you'll receive at the end to where you can just customize

the directions to suit your needs. So here's an example of access Gale In context Middle School at, and at that point you would enter in your direct URL so your users know exactly where to go.

From the homepage, then they can click on Browse Topics and then you're directing them to one of the topic pages myths legends and tales. And then from there, they'll find all of the answers, and they do need to cite your sources which is clearly stated

here in the directions, but everything will be there on the topic page.

So you're giving them some guidance you're introducing them into the Gale resources scavenger hunts are great way to highlight ease of use. Gale In context elementary we have topic pages on all of our in context resources.

And here is an example of Gale In context elementary one of our top to top searches, dogs, cats and dogs are two top searches so dogs here is the one that I've given you a screenshot of, maybe you want to pull in using topic finder, which is that visual

representation of their search results, and you want your students to do a search within topic finder and pull back content that could be one of your questions or you want to showcase highlights and notes as I've done here and Gale In context biography,

where your students are highlighting sections of text, to answer your question and scavenger hunt, or you want to pull out and highlight unique content so we've got is when you speak about ease of use, we have these great and Gale In context science

we have great simulations that are available, why not introduce your students are show the ease of use of something. This type of content that we have available within Gale In context science.
[00:12:27.000]
And then we also have in Gale In context Opposing Viewpoints fantastic infographics that are interactive. So pull out those interactive tools and pull them into the scavenger hunt, maybe your users weren't aware that they were available.

The next key objective is understanding of tools and features. So this is when you take your users on that path and you're asking those questions, take them through using this example is using filter your results can help you find the information you
[00:13:03.000]
are searching for very quickly.
[00:13:05.000]
This is directive, we're telling the user to access the news content type. Use the search within Facebook, and then directing them to an article, and then answer these questions.
[00:13:17.000]
So this question is very directive, and also utilizing some of those tools that we have available within the resource.

Here's another idea. And this is what I like to use I like to pull in a fact or piece of information sometimes at the start of a question. And again, we've given you some examples on the, on the template that you're going to receive today, but here's

another example.
[00:13:44.000]
The 1920s had a dark side that grew after prohibition, with outlawed alcohol. What did the UFC arising especially in Chicago, Illinois, one person had quite the reputation for being ruthless and is still very well known today.

Who is this my boss, use the Get Link tool to share a link to an image of this famous, famous mob boss. So you're taking the user here with this question into the content type of image or images, and then also introducing them, or getting them to use that
[00:14:17.000]
get link tool.
[00:14:19.000]
The final one is build knowledge and critical thinking. So here's a question from Gale In context Elementary. So even our elementary school students are able to use these scavenger hunts and answer questions and get into the resource and hopefully get excited

about them too. But here's an example in Cinderella, a girl marries a prince with help from her Fairy Godmother in magazine so again it's more of a directive question, in magazines read Fairy Godmother from jack and jill, why would the narrator choose
[00:14:51.000]
to be Cinderella's fairy godmother.
[00:14:54.000]
And then this question is more open ended, so not always directive, you can have open ended questions, explore the magazine content type for a recent article on fake news, what is one new interesting fact you discovered.

So that was is referring to Gale in context opposing viewpoints.

So you can see a variety. These are variety of examples. We do have a large amount of scavenger hunts already created for you if you would like to look through multiple examples.

They live on the support site, and the Gale support site will share that link with you. Also with that template at the end.

But now what I'd like to do is I would like to create a question with you. I'd like to take you on the path and create a question. So let's do that together so let's go back into our opposing viewpoints.

And I'm going to start from the homepage of opposing viewpoints, you can see the path.

And let's say I am.
[00:16:02.000]
Let's say I'm a teacher I'm a teacher and I know that we will be covering a unit on global warming, and I really want my students to, they're going to need to do research for for a project and I really want them to use the databases and the resources
[00:16:18.000]
that we have available. So I'm going to build this scavenger hunt. With that in mind, I have my audience.
[00:16:26.000]
I know what my purpose is. Now, let me take a look and see what I have available within Gale in context opposing viewpoints.

So if I start to type in global warming.
[00:16:39.000]
I can see right here. These three topic pages that are available are bolted and they're listed at the top so I know because they're in bold, that it is a topic page and it is available so search assist really helps me out here.

So global warming and climate change is a topic page I'm going to choose.
[00:16:59.000]
And I have all of these great content types. So this is where the fun begins. I can start with maybe I my question is going to be something from the overview that's on my topic page.

Or maybe I want to choose an infographic, which is that unique content type, or maybe primary sources, it's not something I use very often and I want to highlight that with my students that for this one let's go into news.
[00:17:27.000]
So I would take that path I'd go into news.
[00:17:32.000]
And then I have 18,000 over 18,000 news articles well that's kind of a lot if I want my students to look through this content and find the answer to my question.
[00:17:42.000]
So something I might do. And this is, this is twofold right. Not only am I getting them into this content but I'm also introducing them to the filter your results.

So something I might want to do is choose a subject or document type and guide them on that path I've directed them to the content type of news now do I want them to choose a certain subject, choose a document type, maybe a newspaper section, I would
[00:18:09.000]
suggest sticking to these areas, but subjects let's say subject and air pollution.
[00:18:17.000]
And I can put that directly in my question from this point you can decide as you're writing this scavenger hunt. Do I want to choose a particular article and ask them specific questions about that article so is this directive, or is this going to be an
[00:18:30.000]
open ended question.
[00:18:32.000]
Let me show you the example that I wrote.

So let's go back to the PowerPoint real quick.

This is my example using filter your results can help you find the information you are searching for quickly access the news Content Type, select the subject air pollution, select an article that interest you.

idea of the article. Why do you think this topic is important. So that's one route you can take just in an idea and example. Let's look at another.

Let's go back into our topic page, and this time I'm going to remove this filter of air pollution.
[00:19:16.000]
And this time let's go into videos, We have 91 videos available.
[00:19:24.000]
And I can direct my users then to go to the content type of videos, and then also to click on one of the videos and listened to that, or watch listen and watch that video.

So glaciers is the one I chose.
[00:19:40.000]
And the nice thing is, is our lot of our video content you're going to find these transcripts available so if you're building a list when you're, I should say when you're building a scavenger hunt and pulling out text from the transcript can be really

helpful especially if you're using the exact language when you're asking the questions and I'll show you my example that might make a little bit more sense but here are your students can listen to the video, it's, they're watching it so they're engaged.

There's closed captioning available if they need it. But again, it's pulling in different content so it's exposing your, your users to different content available within the resources.

Let's go back and take a look at the sample question.

Just remember to when you're asking these questions that they're going to be your, your students that are answering them or your patrons that are answering them will be asked for not only their answer but also the source.

So, using get link or citation is going to be really important for them to identify that source.
[00:20:50.000]
So here's my second example. Glaciers contain nearly 70% of the Earth's freshwater and our home too many land animals, watch the video from Gale video series glaciers, what is one of the primary indicators of global climate change.

So here it just asked one question but it's specific it's directive, directed them to a certain video gave them a little bit, a fact piece of information to start just another example of how you can ask that question, or a question within your scavenger
[00:21:24.000]
hunt. So as a teacher that was kicking off a unit on global warming and climate change. Here's a few sample, or example questions of what I could ask that would also hit those key objectives that we talked about before, and to get my students into the
[00:21:42.000]
resources and get them using the resources, which then they are building knowledge for that research project that they're going to work on.

One small tip from someone who builds the scavenger hunts.

I do suggest, when you are writing your questions to have an answer sheet running at the same time, so you can on your questions sheet that you're creating here for number one, have a second document where you have the answer to number one, and also

the Source Link, that'll really help you out when you're looking back at these down the road so that's my one little tip that I would share with you today.

Tammi there was one I thought you might want to share the answer with the group. So, the wonder when doing this with students would you recommend introducing the database first and then giving him the scavenger hunt, or starting with the scavenger hunt

and having the kids kind of dive in on their own.

Well, that's actually a great question. Now, I'm going to put this back on the group, was it helpful when I shared the database with you first. Did you feel more comfortable before I went into the training part of the session? that may answer some of your

questions and that is actually why I approached it that way so that we were all on the same page so maybe having your students on the same page and just giving them a brief overview of the database, especially if they're brand new to that database they've.

Maybe they're, you know, coming to your school it's their first year, your school or it's a new database that you've just purchased.
[00:26:13.000]
I think it's a great idea to just briefly introduce the database and then give them that scavenger hunt and let them do a little bit more deeper exploration on their own, but that's a great question.

yeah oh Tammi there was one game any suggestions around gamified yeah that's, you know i that is really a great way to look at this April, if you were using.

If you are using. So there's quite a few apps available right, where you can create a quiz. That's a great idea to pull in this content. Now, I'm not sure how it would look logistically.

I think it would be an idea to play around with. I mean if you're creating a scavenger hunt and you the scavenger hunt has just one question like one of the ones I had on here where it was one question and there's there's an exact answer to it.

When you have those open ended questions gamify it might be a little bit more challenging because there's not just one answer to the question. So that's something to consider.

But I would say, give it a try and and see if it works. I think it's a creative approach to using a scavenger hunt, you may Google Forms is also a good idea if you're using if there's just, you have in your question you just literally have one question

available where it's like more of a multiple choice type or it's just a one answer. You may Google Forms may be something that you could use I've had some folks share that Google Forms works for them.

Okay, can you upload these to Google Classroom so can you upload the scavenger hunt to Google Classroom the template, Margaret.

That is, it is in a Word doc, so you should be able to put that into Google Drive, oh I'm thinking Google Drive, can you upload these into Google Classroom.

Yeah, you know, if you're putting it in Google so my suggestion is take that Word document, change it however you like and put your questions into that scavenger hunt, and then put it in your Google Drive, and then share from your from your Google classroom

It depends on how you have it set up. If that's how you're sharing it with them. The word doc that we've created for you is a template and it can be edited.

And I think there were questions around authentication So, gentlemen, that link let's folks right in and just gives you that article or that video that was shared them when students try to go past their their prompted to authenticate so everybody's authentication

can be a little different. So what I recommend is if you've got more questions about can be easily getting students and patrons into the databases, I would reach out to your customer success manager at Gale, and they can kind of talk with you about about

So let's start talking about building a Gale scavenger hunt. What is the purpose. So I always consider when I, when I'm working on the scavenger hunts and I'm writing them I think there's a term that you're probably familiar with begin with the end in

mind. So think about are you building this scavenger hunt for students so they will learn how to use the database prior to maybe an upcoming research project. is the scavenger hunt a tool for teachers to use with their students at the start of a unit of

study. or are you creating the scavenger hunt for fun for patrons and students to get them acclimated or used to the resources just for fun. It's also very important, I can't stress this enough, it's very important to keep your intended audience in mind.

So think about who are you writing this scavenger for what level they're at what reading level they're at.
[00:02:59.000]
And also what are you trying to achieve with your scavenger hunt.
[00:03:04.000]
So let's briefly talk about some of these key objectives.

Introduce Gale resources. This is a great way to use a scavenger hunt should introduce and acclimate your students or patrons to your Gale resources that you have access to you may have access to them through your state you may have access to them through
[00:03:22.000]
your individual site also highlight, ease of use. GALEN context resources and we're focusing on the In Context resources today. Gale In Context resources are very user friendly.

We have topic pages, you have search options like topic finder, tools such as citations, or get link, and also really unique and interactive content. So highlighting that ease of use and also showcasing some content is a great way to use a scavenger hunt,

or a key objective for a scavenger hunt.

Using a scavenger hunt to understand the tools and the features so build that understanding scavenger hunts is is a great way to point out some of those tools and features available within your Gale resources.

And then finally we want to build knowledge and critical thinking skills.

So build user knowledge of how to use the resources, share content that's available develop research skills, and also develop those critical thinking skills.

So before we dive into each of these a little bit deeper and I give you some examples.

I want to start with a topic page so that we're all on the same page. I want to show you a topic page within one of our In Context resources, and you may have access to different In Context resource than the one I'm going to show today, but I am going

to share with you. Gale In Context Opposing Viewpoints and are in a few items I want to point out so that we're all on the same page, all of your In Context resources have fantastic topic pages now we are in opposing viewpoints, which if you're not familiar,

this is our pro con hot social issues resource, and the homepage, as all our homepage is have in your in context, sweet or in context family have topic pages here they're organized by subject category, I can very easily click into health and medicine,

and there's 100 different topic pages available, or I can go to browse all issues now I'm in Opposing Viewpoints so that's why you're seeing issues if you were in say Gale In context high school or middle school or elementary you're going to see browse

all topics rather than issues.

But what's a little unique for this resource it says browse all issues so I can access all of the topic pages at once, do some searching, find topic pages that are maybe I'm a teacher and I'm, I'm kicking off a unit, and I'm looking for a topic page that

I want to build a scavenger hunt around. Now the reason why, and we're going to go to let's actually go into one of these let's go to space exploration,

our template is built around this idea the first, the directions that are given are to access a topic page. So, showing these topic pages to you so that you're comfortable and understand, and we're all on the same page.

I want to point out a few items, you do have content types and that's here in the center of the page. We have a variety of content types on this topic page, always really helpful if you have a lot of choices available.

So we have some unique ones like infographics we've got great multimedia images and videos reference documents you can see that we have viewpoints which because we're an opposing viewpoints, we have a viewpoints content type, but you may want to use statistics

in your scavenger hunt so these content types are really helpful to guide your users or your students patrons, to the point where they're going to find the article or image that you're referencing in your question, few other tools I just want to point

out real quick.

You also have the get link option so get link. What it does is it creates a persistent URL back to any spot within your resource, because as you'll see on the template that you'll receive at the end.

Not only do we ask for the answer but also the source. So get link provides the opportunity to link back to content within the resource or.

Let me go into an article we're going to go into reference.

And once that opens. Here we go. Let's click into this first document.

We of course have the citation tool.

So they can grab the citation and share that with you, or as their source right we want to definitely want to cite the source to the answer to their question, or use the get link.

So just two tools I wanted to point out real quick for you as we are looking at this information. One other area I'm going to point out before we go back to the PowerPoint.

And when you are on a content type you have these this is another tool that you may want to pull into your scavenger hunt filter your results so if you're introducing this you want your students using this resource.

And, and using the tools within filtering your results by subject or document type could be really great to us, or highlight within your scavenger hunt.

Okay, so now that we're all on the same page. Let's go back to that PowerPoint.

Don't forget to ask any questions that you have throughout the session Stacey's monitoring the q and a box. So again, these four key objectives, we're going to now take a look at examples of those key objectives and also some sample questions too, and

then we're going to build our own question. So introduce Gale resources you're introducing you're giving them you're introducing them to a brand new resource maybe or it's a new school year, and they need to refresh.

So, sharing a resource with your students.

Also the access point how are they accessing the resource and also introducing them to topic pages, highlight, ease of use, there's so many different tools and features within your Gale resources that are make using them so friendly to students of all

ages and patrons to that, it's a great way scavenger hunt is a great way to highlight that ease of use, by using looking at the topic pages or using topic finder, understanding of the tools and features, you have great tools and features within get link

highlights and notes. This is a great way to build your students knowledge of those tools and features. And then finally, talking about build knowledge build knowledge and critical thinking skills because with your question there following your path,

and then they're doing some reading, they're doing some exploration into the content a little bit deeper and answering those questions.

So let's start with the first one introduce Gale resources. So here's what you'll see this on the template to you want to provide clear directions and we've given you this on the template that you'll receive at the end to where you can just customize

the directions to suit your needs. So here's an example of access Gale In context Middle School at, and at that point you would enter in your direct URL so your users know exactly where to go.

From the homepage, then they can click on Browse Topics and then you're directing them to one of the topic pages myths legends and tales. And then from there, they'll find all of the answers, and they do need to cite your sources which is clearly stated

here in the directions, but everything will be there on the topic page.

So you're giving them some guidance you're introducing them into the Gale resources scavenger hunts are great way to highlight ease of use. Gale In context elementary we have topic pages on all of our in context resources.

And here is an example of Gale In context elementary one of our top to top searches, dogs, cats and dogs are two top searches so dogs here is the one that I've given you a screenshot of, maybe you want to pull in using topic finder, which is that visual

representation of their search results, and you want your students to do a search within topic finder and pull back content that could be one of your questions or you want to showcase highlights and notes as I've done here and Gale In context biography,

where your students are highlighting sections of text, to answer your question and scavenger hunt, or you want to pull out and highlight unique content so we've got is when you speak about ease of use, we have these great and Gale In context science

we have great simulations that are available, why not introduce your students are show the ease of use of something. This type of content that we have available within Gale In context science.

And then we also have in Gale In context Opposing Viewpoints fantastic infographics that are interactive. So pull out those interactive tools and pull them into the scavenger hunt, maybe your users weren't aware that they were available.

The next key objective is understanding of tools and features. So this is when you take your users on that path and you're asking those questions, take them through using this example is using filter your results can help you find the information you

are searching for very quickly.

This is directive, we're telling the user to access the news content type. Use the search within Facebook, and then directing them to an article, and then answer these questions.

So this question is very directive, and also utilizing some of those tools that we have available within the resource.

Here's another idea. And this is what I like to use I like to pull in a fact or piece of information sometimes at the start of a question. And again, we've given you some examples on the, on the template that you're going to receive today, but here's

The 1920s had a dark side that grew after prohibition, with outlawed alcohol. What did the UFC arising especially in Chicago, Illinois, one person had quite the reputation for being ruthless and is still very well known today.

Who is this my boss, use the Get Link tool to share a link to an image of this famous, famous mob boss. So you're taking the user here with this question into the content type of image or images, and then also introducing them, or getting them to use that

The final one is build knowledge and critical thinking. So here's a question from Gale In context Elementary. So even our elementary school students are able to use these scavenger hunts and answer questions and get into the resource and hopefully get excited

about them too. But here's an example in Cinderella, a girl marries a prince with help from her Fairy Godmother in magazine so again it's more of a directive question, in magazines read Fairy Godmother from jack and jill, why would the narrator choose

to be Cinderella's fairy godmother.

And then this question is more open ended, so not always directive, you can have open ended questions, explore the magazine content type for a recent article on fake news, what is one new interesting fact you discovered.

So you can see a variety. These are variety of examples. We do have a large amount of scavenger hunts already created for you if you would like to look through multiple examples.

But now what I'd like to do is I would like to create a question with you. I'd like to take you on the path and create a question. So let's do that together so let's go back into our opposing viewpoints.

And I'm going to start from the homepage of opposing viewpoints, you can see the path.

And let's say I am.

Let's say I'm a teacher I'm a teacher and I know that we will be covering a unit on global warming, and I really want my students to, they're going to need to do research for for a project and I really want them to use the databases and the resources

that we have available. So I'm going to build this scavenger hunt. With that in mind, I have my audience.

I know what my purpose is. Now, let me take a look and see what I have available within Gale in context opposing viewpoints.

So if I start to type in global warming.

I can see right here. These three topic pages that are available are bolted and they're listed at the top so I know because they're in bold, that it is a topic page and it is available so search assist really helps me out here.

So global warming and climate change is a topic page I'm going to choose.

And I have all of these great content types. So this is where the fun begins. I can start with maybe I my question is going to be something from the overview that's on my topic page.

Or maybe I want to choose an infographic, which is that unique content type, or maybe primary sources, it's not something I use very often and I want to highlight that with my students that for this one let's go into news.

So I would take that path I'd go into news.

And then I have 18,000 over 18,000 news articles well that's kind of a lot if I want my students to look through this content and find the answer to my question.

So something I might do. And this is, this is twofold right. Not only am I getting them into this content but I'm also introducing them to the filter your results.

So something I might want to do is choose a subject or document type and guide them on that path I've directed them to the content type of news now do I want them to choose a certain subject, choose a document type, maybe a newspaper section, I would

suggest sticking to these areas, but subjects let's say subject and air pollution.

And I can put that directly in my question from this point you can decide as you're writing this scavenger hunt. Do I want to choose a particular article and ask them specific questions about that article so is this directive, or is this going to be an

open ended question.

Let me show you the example that I wrote.

So let's go back to the PowerPoint real quick.

This is my example using filter your results can help you find the information you are searching for quickly access the news Content Type, select the subject air pollution, select an article that interest you.

idea of the article. Why do you think this topic is important. So that's one route you can take just in an idea and example. Let's look at another.

Let's go back into our topic page, and this time I'm going to remove this filter of air pollution.

And this time let's go into videos, We have 91 videos available.

And I can direct my users then to go to the content type of videos, and then also to click on one of the videos and listened to that, or watch listen and watch that video.

So glaciers is the one I chose.

And the nice thing is, is our lot of our video content you're going to find these transcripts available so if you're building a list when you're, I should say when you're building a scavenger hunt and pulling out text from the transcript can be really

helpful especially if you're using the exact language when you're asking the questions and I'll show you my example that might make a little bit more sense but here are your students can listen to the video, it's, they're watching it so they're engaged.

There's closed captioning available if they need it. But again, it's pulling in different content so it's exposing your, your users to different content available within the resources.

Let's go back and take a look at the sample question.

Just remember to when you're asking these questions that they're going to be your, your students that are answering them or your patrons that are answering them will be asked for not only their answer but also the source.

So, using get link or citation is going to be really important for them to identify that source.

So here's my second example. Glaciers contain nearly 70% of the Earth's freshwater and our home too many land animals, watch the video from Gale video series glaciers, what is one of the primary indicators of global climate change.

So here it just asked one question but it's specific it's directive, directed them to a certain video gave them a little bit, a fact piece of information to start just another example of how you can ask that question, or a question within your scavenger

hunt. So as a teacher that was kicking off a unit on global warming and climate change. Here's a few sample, or example questions of what I could ask that would also hit those key objectives that we talked about before, and to get my students into the

resources and get them using the resources, which then they are building knowledge for that research project that they're going to work on.

When you have those open ended questions gamify it might be a little bit more challenging because there's not just one answer to the question. So that's something to consider.

But I would say, give it a try and and see if it works. I think it's a creative approach to using a scavenger hunt, you may Google Forms is also a good idea if you're using if there's just, you have in your question you just literally have one question
