Energy

We are committed to accelerating the renewable energy transition and have achieved 100 percent renewable energy for our global operations.

Meta is one of the largest corporate buyers of renewable energy and supports our global operations with 100% renewable energy. We achieve this by adding new wind and solar projects to the same local grids as our data centers, which also helps drive the transition to renewable energy.

By 2025, 86 Meta-supported wind and solar projects in the U.S. will add 9.8 GW of renewable energy to local grids across 24 states and 74 counties and support $8B+ in GDP throughout the U.S. economy in addition to jobs, business for local suppliers and new tax revenue.

Enabling the transition to renewable energy

Not all utilities offer electric rates (or “tariffs,” as utilities call them) that allow customers to support their facilities with renewable energy. When this is the case, we work with utility partners to create new green tariffs or design other new renewable energy arrangements.

These utility-sponsored programs allow corporate customers to purchase renewable energy and renewable energy credits via their retail electricity service and address their sustainability goals.

The green tariffs and renewable energy arrangements we have supported account for over 4,000 MW of new wind and solar capacity, enough to power more than 2.9 million U.S. homes.

Energy storage

Adding energy storage to the grid is an important tool that enables utilities to move the electricity produced from a solar project, for instance, into times of the day when sunshine is not available. This provides greater reliability and flexibility to the utility system and enables a much lower carbon footprint, as utilities integrate even more renewable energy on their grids.

Near our Los Lunas data center in Valencia County, New Mexico, we partnered with our local utility, Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM), to add 50 MW of battery storage alongside the addition of 240 MW of solar through our innovative green tariff.

We have worked with utility partners, PNM and Tennessee Valley Authority, to add 130 MW of battery energy storage to the grid in New Mexico, Kentucky and Mississippi.

Advancing industry standards

As a founding member of the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance (REBA), a strategic partner of RE-Source (a European platform for corporate renewable energy sourcing), and a member of RE100 (a global initiative of influential businesses committed to 100 percent renewable electricity), we work with an extensive network of other companies to scale corporate procurement of clean energy across industries.

Sustainability impact map

We are committed to creating a positive impact on the communities where we operate. That is why all of our renewable energy projects are interconnected to the same electric grid as our facilities. This map highlights our renewable energy procurement and deployment efforts worldwide, water stewardship efforts in the communities we operate in, and other sustainability features across our global portfolio of data centers.
