Question:
How can I prevent my dog from barking all of the time?
Answer:
Allowing your dog to bark excessively is against the law and can be reported, but here are some techniques to help you:
Teach your dog a "quiet" command. They need to know how much barking is ok. Allow 2-3 barks, then say "quiet"; you can interrupt the barking with a shake from a can filled with pennies or a squirt with a water bottle. Once the dog is quiet, say "Good Quiet" and give a reward.
Have your dog spayed/neutered to decrease territorial behavior.
Walk your dog often. It's good exercise, both mental and physical.
Keep your dog inside when you are not at home to supervise.
Keep toys available for your dog.
When left alone in the house, help your pet's loneliness by leaving a radio on. Be sure to leave toys for amusement.
Don't make a big thing out of leaving or returning home; an overly excited dog is more likely to bark and yelp.
Consider taking your pet to an obedience training school.
Let your neighbors know that you are actively working on the problem.
The best cure for the barking habit is prevention early in a dog's life. If a dog already has a barking habit, then you must make efforts to correct the situation. Whatever training method you choose, be consistent with your pet. Your dog will learn that his silence pleases you.
