Limbaugh: GOP establishment ‘can’t afford’ to have Trump succeed with agenda

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh said the establishment wing of the Republican Party is hoping that President Trump’s agenda will fail.

“They don’t want Trump to succeed with his agenda. They can’t afford that. I’m not exaggerating here and I’m not trying to say things that will be in a soundbite that Fox replays for the rest of the day,” Limbaugh said in an interview on Fox News’s “Hannity” to be aired on Thursday night.

“The lids blown, the gig is over, the joke is revealed; if an outsider with no prior political experience can come in and fix messes that people have been promised would be fixed for 30 years, how does that make them look? They can’t allow that to happen,” he told host Sean Hannity. 

{mosads}Limbaugh’s comments come after former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore defeated GOP establishment favorite Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) in the Republican primary runoff to serve out the remainder of Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s Senate term. 

While Trump endorsed Strange in the primary, he has embraced Moore and has promised to join him on the campaign trail this fall.

Moore, a favorite of Trump’s anti-establishment base, has been a source of anxiety for the party’s establishment wing in Congress due to his past rhetoric and far-right religious views. 

The administration is currently working with congressional Republicans to pass tax reform.

However, Republicans have failed this year to fulfill their campaign promise to repeal and replace Obamacare, angering the president’s base.
