Donor FAQ

DO I NEED TO PAY A SUBSCRIPTION FEE TO READ THE INTERCEPT?

No. We don’t have a paywall so that everyone can have access to our work, no matter what their financial situation. We do ask that frequent readers subscribe to our free newsletter— and if you can afford to donate, you can help keep The Intercept available to all by becoming a member.

If you have already subscribed to our newsletter or donated to The Intercept and continue to see the email subscription prompt on the site, please click the button marked “Already Subscribed?” at the bottom of the prompt.

WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT THE INTERCEPT?

As a nonprofit organization, The Intercept relies on donations from our readers and listeners as a key funding source for our journalism. As a member, you help us hold the powerful to account, give voice to the voiceless, and tell stories you won’t find anywhere else. The Intercept’s membership program ensures that we will remain strong and independent and demonstrates public support for the kind of fierce, adversarial journalism we do every day.

WHAT IS THE INTERCEPT’S GIFT POLICY?

Updated July 11, 2023

The Intercept is a nonprofit newsroom that relies on public support to sustain our work. We accept funding from individuals, foundations, partnerships, corporations, and other organizations. Our mission depends on our independence. Editorial decisions are never based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source and we do not accept donations with any conditions that create an actual or apparent conflict of interest with our work or otherwise compromise our independence.
We accept contributions for general support, coverage of broad topic areas, and specific projects. All news judgments are made independently. We do not permit supporters to assign, review, or edit any of our content, nor do we share any pre-publication material with supporters.

In the interest of transparency, we publicly disclose all supporters who have given a total of $5,000 or more and their cumulative annual giving by publishing our IRS 990 form Schedule B on our website. In cases where we are reporting on a person or entity who has contributed more than $5,000, we disclose the relationship in the story. We accept anonymous donations only in cases that adhere to this policy.

We do not accept support from government entities, political campaigns, political action committees, or political organizations as defined in Section 527 of the IRS Code.

DOES A SMALL DONATION MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE?

Absolutely! A donation of any amount is welcome. By making a contribution, you send a powerful message and demonstrate the public demand for courageous, adversarial journalism. Your donation helps us spread the word that our readers and listeners are passionate about supporting the reporting that matters to them.

IS MY DONATION TO THE INTERCEPT TAX DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes (in the United States). The Intercept Media Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) organization (tax ID number 92-1198452).

WHAT WILL HAPPEN WITH MY INFORMATION WHEN I MAKE A CONTRIBUTION?

When you make a donation to The Intercept, you are agreeing to share personally identifying information with the organization. We do not sell or trade your information to anyone, in any form, and go to great lengths to ensure that your information is stored in a manner that comports with information security best practices. Anyone who handles your data is held to rigorous privacy standards. Please refer to our privacy policy and donor privacy practices.

IS MY DONATION DISCLOSED TO ANYONE?

The IRS requires 501(c)(3) organizations to list donors who give $5,000 or more on their 990s.

HOW DOES THE INTERCEPT USE MY DONATION? HOW CAN I SEE YOUR FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES?

Your entire contribution to The Intercept goes to support projects and journalism for The Intercept. You can find our 990s on our Impact and Reports page.

First Look Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports courageous investigative journalism, innovative and cinematic nonfiction filmmaking, and provides essential legal support to protect the right to a free and open society and press. First Look Institute was the home of The Intercept from its founding in 2014 to 2023 with generous financial support from Pierre Omidyar.

Now, backed by a four-year financial commitment from First Look Institute, The Intercept became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2023.

WHAT IS YOUR DONATION REFUND POLICY?

We are committed to being transparent and accountable to our members on how we use the generous support we receive.

Refunds for donations will only be granted within 45 days of the payment date. In order to initiate a refund request, please email our Donor Services team at membership@theintercept.com. Refunds will only be issued to the original method of payment.

For donations at or above $1,000, refund requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. We understand that circumstances may arise which warrant a refund for these larger contributions.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE A NON-FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION?

We’re always happy to help you at membership@theintercept.com.

Thank you for your interest in supporting The Intercept.
