Teachers alert: know the eligibility criteria for the CTET examinations

Various exams and qualification tests are carried out to ensure that teachers of an institution are qualified and capable of handling the students. The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), one of India’s most prestigious exams, is administered by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). It is carried out in 112 cities across India, and candidates can choose whether to give the exam in Hindi or English.

Eligibility Criteria for CTET Exam

The CTET exam has two papers — Paper-I and Paper-II. Candidates must meet the eligibility criteria for the papers.

Eligibility Criteria for Paper-I (primary level)

To be qualified as a primary level teacher for grades 1 to 5, applicants must meet any one of the following CTET eligibility criteria:

Applicants should have completed a Senior Secondary or corresponding exam with at least 50 per cent marks.

They should also have cleared or been preparing for the final year exam of a two-year Elementary Education Diploma programme.

Applicants should have secured 45 per cent marks in senior high school or its equivalent. In addition, they should also have cleared or about to take the final year exam of a two-year diploma in Elementary Education, as required by the NCTE Regulations of 2002.

Applicants must have gained at least 50 per cent marks on a Senior Secondary or equivalent test. They should also have cleared or be taking the final year exam of a four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.EI.Ed).

Candidates should have secured a minimum of 50 per cent marks in the Senior Secondary or equivalent exam. They should also have completed or been in the last year of a two-year diploma in education (special education).

They should be graduated with at least 50 per cent marks and hold a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) degree.

Eligibility Criteria for Paper-II (elementary level)

To be qualified as an elementary school teacher of grades 6 to 8, applicants should meet one of the following CTET eligibility criteria:

Candidates for this post should be graduates who have cleared or are preparing for the last year exam of a two-year Diploma in Elementary Education.

Aspirants should have received a minimum of 50 per cent marks in their graduation. They should also have completed or are presently enrolled in a one-year Bachelor in Education (B.Ed) degree.

They should have secured at least 45 per cent marks in their graduation and have passed or are currently enrolled in a one-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) program in compliance with the NCTE guidelines.

Applicants should possess at least 50 per cent marks in Senior Secondary and have passed or are appearing for the final year exam of the four-year Bachelor in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) programme.

Applicants should have received at least 50 per cent marks in Senior Secondary or its equivalent. Along with this, they should also have completed or are in the last year of a four-year B.A/B.Sc.Ed or B.A.Ed/B.Sc.Ed degree.

Candidates should have secured at least 50 per cent marks in their graduation and have passed or are actively preparing for a one-year B.Ed (special education).

Points to consider

Some important points need to be kept in mind before applying for the exam.

Candidates who fall within SC/ST/OBC/PwD categories are given a 5 per cent reduction in the minimum score required to take the CTET exam.

Only National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE)-accredited diplomas and degrees will be accepted.

The Diploma in Education (Special Education) and B.Ed (Special Education) will only be considered if it is acknowledged by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI).

An aspirant holding a Diploma in Education (Special Education) needs to complete a six-month NCTE-approved unique Elementary Education program.

In CTET’s criteria, educational qualification applies to teachers of Languages, Social Studies / Social Science, Maths, Science, etc.

For teachers of physical education, qualification norms will be applied per NCTE regulations.

Norms specified by the State Government or other administrations will apply to teachers of Art Education, Craft Education, Home Science, Work Education, and others.

Other parameters

Apart from the educational qualification requirements, the candidate should also keep in mind the criteria given below:

Nationality
A person applying for the exam should be an Indian citizen.

Age Limit
There are no age restrictions for taking this exam. However, the applicant must be at least 17 years old and meets the criteria listed above to take the test.

Qualifying marks
The CTET exam is worth 50 points and is divided into five sections. Candidates in General Category must score at least 60 per cent, while those in OBC/SC/ST categories must score 55 per cent.
