1. PERSONAL SURVIVAL TECHNIQUES COURSE CRITERIA
Aim
To give seafarers the essential education and training in personal survival techniques meeting the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following:
Table A-VI/1-1
Function: Personal survival techniques
Competence: Survive at sea in the event of ship abandonment
Entry requirements
The candidate must be at least 16 years of age to be issued with a Certificate of Proficiency. In exceptional circumstances where a candidate is physically able and fit they may be able to complete the training course prior to his/her 16th birthday.
Candidates must be aware that the practical aspects of the training are physically demanding in nature. If there is any doubt as to an individual’s ability to participate in such exercises candidates should consider obtaining a UK ENG1 seafarer medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness.
2. FIRE PREVENTION AND FIRE FIGHTING COURSE CRITERIA
Aim
To give seafarers the essential education and training in fire prevention and fire fighting meeting the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following:

Function: Fire prevention and fire fighting
Competences: Minimise the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire Fight and extinguish fires
Entry requirements
Candidates must be aware that the practical aspects of the training are physically demanding in nature with some of the exercises involving live fires and the use of breathing apparatus. If there is any doubt as to an individual’s ability to participate in such exercises candidates should consider obtaining a UK ENG1 seafarer medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness.
3. ELEMENTARY FIRST AID COURSE CRITERIA
Aim
To give seafarers the essential education and training in elementary first aid meeting the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following:

Function: Elementary first aid
Competence: Take immediate action upon encountering an accident or other medical emergency
Entry requirements
Before commencing training, candidates must be at least 16 years of age. There are no pre-requisites in terms of prior training.
4. PERSONAL SAFETY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (PSSR)
Aim
To give all persons intending to go to sea the education and training in personal safety and social responsibilities to meet the Knowledge, Understanding and Proficiency (KUP) requirements set out in the following:

Function: Specification of minimum standard of competence in personal safety and social responsibilities
Competences: Comply with emergency procedures; Take precautions to prevent pollution of the marine environment; Observe safe working practices; Contribute to effective communications on board ship; Contribute to effective human relationships on board ship; Understand and take necessary actions to control fatigue
Entry requirements
There are no entry requirements, however the training forms part of the requirements for basic training for seafarers employed or engaged in any capacity onboard ship, as part of the ship’s complement with designated safety or pollution prevention duties, in the operation of the ship. The training must be undertaken before new entrants are assigned to any such shipboard duties.
