Updated Proficiency in Advanced Fire Fighting

(Regulation VI/3, paragraph 1 and Section A-VI/3, paragraphs 5 and 6 of the STCW Convention and Code 1978, as amended)

Aim

Seafarers qualified in proficiency in advanced fire fighting are required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence, to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities associated with advanced fire fighting operations on board ship.

The aim of this course is to give all those seeking updating training certification for advanced fire fighting the essential education and training set out in Table A-VI/3-1.

Entry requirements

Seafarers must have been previously issued with an MCA ‘PROFICIENCY IN ADVANCED FIRE FIGHTING’ certificate or an alternative certificate acceptable to the MCA.

Candidates must be aware that the practical aspects of the training are physically demanding in nature with some of the exercises involving live fires and the use of breathing apparatus. If there is any doubt as to an individual’s ability to participate in such exercises candidates should consider obtaining a UK ENG1 medical certificate, or equivalent, as an indicator of fitness.
