For the second consecutive year, a student of The University of Trinidad and Tobago’s (UTT) Utilities Engineering programme has won the International IET Prize Competition. This prize is awarded yearly to outstanding students who are currently undertaking, or have completed an IET Accredited University course.
The 2021 prize went to Venessa Bhagwat, a prospective graduate of the National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) Electrical/Electronic Engineering Programme at UTT San Fernando Campus.
Venessa is an exceptionally accomplished young woman who started the programme in September 2019 and is expected to graduate in November 2021. She is an exemplary student, achieving a consistent CGPA of 4.00 throughout her programme.
Venessa also has an impressive resume. She attended Naparima Girls’ High School and was awarded a National Scholarship for outstanding achievement at CAPE-level examinations. She was also awarded membership in the National Society of High School Scholars. She holds a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Chemical and Process Engineering with First Class Honours from The University of the West Indies (UWI), and a Master of Engineering (M.Eng) & ACGI in Aeronautical Engineering with First Class Honours from Imperial College, London.
One might ask why would Venessa choose to pursue a NETD programme when she is already the holder of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. To this, Venessa has stated that she decided to pursue a career in the field of engineering in her final years of high school. Whilst pursuing her Master of Engineering degree in Aeronautical Engineering, she realised that it would be to her advantage to acquire practical and technical industry skills. She was particularly interested in the technical work conducted by avionics technicians, which she observed during two brief industry placements.
After graduating, she sought to receive this technical training, as it would be a crucial asset, not only to her skillset, but also for prospective employers. As a result, she decided to pursue the National Engineering Technician Diploma (NETD) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering at UTT. In addition to its emphasis on practical competencies which give students the opportunity to build their theoretical and practical skills, she was particularly enthused by the Co-Op component which offers Co-operative Education for all of its full-time students, who are assigned to companies related to their course of study for a six-to-eight month period at the end of their second year in the programme.
With her magnetic personality and ardent approach to academics, Venessa has left a lasting impression on her lecturers and fellow students. She is a consistent top performer and is committed to constantly improving her personal best. An all-round student, she is well liked by all. Her commitment to excellence is most commendable and she is a wonderful example to her classmates.
The Utilities Engineering Unit and The University of Trinidad and Tobago are proud of Venessa and congratulate her on her meritorious achievements. We wish her all the best in her future engineering career.
