Sony’s “The Walk” is receiving an early release at Imax theaters on Sept. 30 — more than a week before the wide release on Oct. 9.

The film, which will open the New York Film Festival on Sept. 25, is based on Philippe Petit’s 1974 walk on a wire between the Towers of the World Trade Center. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars in the film, directed by Robert Zemeckis from a screenplay by  Zemeckis and Christopher Browne and based on the Petit’s book “To Reach the Clouds.” Producers are Steve Starkey, Zemeckis and Jack Rapke.

“We’re excited to be part of Sony’s exclusive release for ‘The Walk,’ which was designed for and makes brilliant use of Imax 3D,” said Imax’s Greg Foster. “No one understands Imax better than our longtime partner Bob Zemeckis – he is an artistic genius who uses all of his expertise to give audiences an edge-of-your-seat thrill that will make moviegoers feel like they are out on the tightrope themselves.”
