After a year of shuttered storefronts and closed businesses, e-commerce has been a saving grace for small business owners whose livelihoods were disrupted by the pandemic. Many owners successfully changed their business models, shifting to virtual stores that would allow customers to get products delivered to their door instead of shopping in person. But smaller businesses can flail in comparison to online retail behemoths like Amazon, who have the luxury to offer same-day delivery and unbeatable prices.
Thankfully, Amazon has created an incentive for Prime members to shop small when they inevitably flock to the site at the end of the month for Prime Day, the company’s huge annual deals event on June 21 and 22. In the same promotion they used last year, Amazon will offer a $10 credit to Prime members who spend $10 on select small and medium-sized businesses. “Amazon’s Support Small” landing page went live June 7 and will run through Prime Day, with more than 300,000 sellers to choose from.
Kristen Bell, Mindy Kaling and Karamo Brown are the face of the promotion, for which they’ve each curated their favorite products from small, locally-owned businesses. The landing page allows user to shop by categories such as home goods and technology, or even by more specific preferences like Black-owned or women-owned. Last year, the promotion successfully generated over $900 million for small businesses.
