Inspired by the diverse lived experiences of Torontonians, Tapestry of Movement is an interdisciplinary and community-engaged public art project developed by artist Sean Martindale, in collaboration with SpudBomb; local resident artists Angela Malley, Cheryl Lynn Peacock, Kate Yee, and Turtle Shell Woman, with support from emerging artists Daniela Rocha, Wandy Cheng, and Laiken Breau.
The mural’s colourful and welcoming design was informed by the building’s architecture, function, and the community it serves. Its design was also inspired by the Elm Centre community who both participated in programming facilitated by artist Bareket Kezwer leading up to the work's creation and added their personal touches to the mural.
Fostering community and business partnerships are integral to the success of STEPS’ public projects. In addition to Partnership Program support from StreetARToronto, Tapestry of Movement has been made possible through collaborations with Ontario 150, Ontario Arts Council, Hal Jackman Foundation, Rotary Toronto’s Women’s Committee, Dulux Paint, Home Depot, the YWCA, and City Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, for Ward 27 - Toronto Centre Rosedale.
