JUAN C. GONZÁLEZ NAMED GEORGETOWN'S
NEW VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Washington, D.C. – President Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J., announced the appointment of Juan C. González, Ph.D., as the new Vice President for Student Affairs at Georgetown University. González has served as the Vice President for Student Affairs at California Polytechnic State University since 1994, where he has directed a comprehensive student affairs program. Before joining Cal Poly, Juan was the Vice President of the Student Affairs Division at California State University, San Bernardino, responsible for the management and strategic planning for all internal and external student affairs matters. Prior to that, he was the Assistant to the President at Cal State, San Bernardino. González succeeds Dean James A. Donahue, Ph.D., who is leaving Georgetown after seven years of service as the dean of students, to become the president of the Graduate Theological Union, an academic center for ecumenical graduate theological education in Berkley, CA.

"Juan brings to Georgetown University a distinguished record as an educator, community builder and administrative leader," said Fr. O’Donovan. "We have great confidence that our Georgetown students will thrive under his leadership."

González's work in student affairs has been recognized by scholars and several educational organizations. Recently selected for a second term as the chair of the Hispanic Caucus of the American Association of Higher Education, he also has served as a member of the Executive Board of the American Association of University Administrators. González has published a number of articles on the topics of diversity and expanding equity in higher education. In addition, he has lectured at a number of national conferences on the importance of employing an outcomes-based model of management within higher education in order to enhance student learning. González holds a doctoral degree in educational psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a master's degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in bilingual and bicultural education, and a bachelor's degree in Latin-American studies from Texas Tech University.

The Vice President for Student Affairs reports to the President and the Provost, and is a member of the Council of Deans at Georgetown University. The Vice President is responsible for providing leadership and direction for comprehensive services to undergraduate and graduate students on the main campus including direct responsibility for residence life; student programs; student conduct; off campus affairs; career services; a center for minority educational affairs; a center for volunteer and public service; public safety; health education; and counseling and psychiatric services. The Vice President collaborates with the department of athletics, campus ministry and student primary care services, and works in cooperation with university and alumni relations to develop resources that support student services.

Georgetown University, founded in 1789, is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit university. More than 12,000 students from 50 states and 110 countries attend the University’s eight schools.
