"What drew the Jesuits to the classics may
well have been their seductive blend of politics and beauty. Apart from
their completeness and their intrinsic beauty, they provide a distancing
from the useful and non-contemplative learning which schools like Georgetown
regard as distracting. The classics also teach to the young a lesson that
is otherwise rarely acquired, the sure and certain knowledge that great
civilizations, however rich in beauty and power, can perish from the earth."
-Timothy S. Healy, S.J.
President, Georgetown University (1976-1989)
