Twenty-four primarily indigenous young people from Ecuador, ages 6 to 17, perform arrangements of traditional music from South America, as well as classical and contemporary works by European and North and South American composers. The Fundación Brass Band del Ecuador was formed to train young musicians for possible careers as musicians.Since its formation the band has performed extensively in Ecuador, in Europe, and at the United Nations. This June the group is presenting concerts on the West Coast and in the New York City area, including a performance at the NMAI ’s George Gustav Heye Center on June 20.

These programs have received support from the Latino Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives. Additional support provided by the Latin American Folk Institute, the Kennedy Center Performing Arts for Everyone,and the Smithsonian National Zoological Park.

Five nations join together for an evening of hymns and songs. This program is part of an ongoing NMAI project documenting the role of hymn-singing in the preservation of Native languages. Presented in partnership with the Smithsonian Folklife Festival and the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, Smithsonian Institution.
