Double Standards and Civil Liberties in the War on Terrorism
Location: OSI-Baltimore
Event Date(s): October 22, 2003
Event Time: 2:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Guest Speaker(s): David Cole

Award-wining author David Cole, discusses and signs copies of his most recent book, Enemy Aliens: Double Standards and Constitutional Freedoms in the War on Terrorism (2003). In the book, Cole explores the fate of the more than 1,200 people detained by the U.S. government since September 11, not a single one of whom has been charged with any crime. Cole argues that in balancing liberty and security we have consistently relied on a double standard, imposing measures on foreigners that we would not tolerate if they were applied more broadly to us all and states that history shows that acceptance of such treatment for outsiders paves the way for similar measures against American citizens.

This event is part of Forging Open Society: Generating Ideas, Partnerships and Solutions forums convened by OSI-Baltimore to encourage community leaders with diverse perspectives to craft solutions to challenges facing the Baltimore region.
