Cheney Building Dedication to be Held in Casper
"June 1 Event Honors One of Wyoming's Favorite Sons"

Washington -- U. S. Representative Barbara Cubin (R-WY) announced today that the ceremony to dedicate the Casper Federal Building in honor of former Wyoming U.S. Representative Dick Cheney will be held on Tuesday, June 1 at 10:30 a.m. in front of the federal building at 100 East "B" Street in Casper.

In honor and recognition of the many years of public service Mr. Cheney gave to Wyoming and his country, Rep. Cubin introduced legislation in 1998 which renamed the Casper Federal Building and Post Office as the Dick Cheney Federal Building. This measure was overwhelmingly passed by Congress and signed into law.

"For nearly two decades Dick Cheney put the needs of Wyoming and the country above all else. He was, and will always be, a faithful public servant and true patriot whose dedication to duty took him from the halls of Casper's Natrona County High School to the halls of Congress, the Pentagon, and the White House," said Cubin. "Dick's many years of service and dedication to Wyoming and the nation are an inspiration to us all. I'm sure all of Wyoming looks forward to honoring him in this way."

Attending the dedication will be Dick and Lynne Cheney, their family, and other notables. The Natrona County High School ROTC will present the Colors and the Kelly Walsh Chorus will provide the vocals for the National Anthem and other selections.

Dick Cheney is from Casper and attended Natrona County High School before moving on to serve in Congress, the Pentagon, and the White House. In 1975 Cheney was named President Gerald Ford's Chief of Staff — at age 34 the youngest chief of staff to ever serve a President. He was elected to serve as Wyoming's Congressman in 1978 and was reelected five times thereafter. While in the U.S. House, Cheney was elected Chairman of the Republican Conference, and House Minority Whip. In 1989 he was appointed Secretary of Defense by President Bush and served in that capacity until 1993.

Among his many accomplishments, Cheney directed Operation Desert Storm, America's most successful military operation in the last half of the 20th century and one of our most decisive and overwhelming military victories in history. For his leadership in the Gulf War, President Bush awarded Cheney the Presidential Medal of Freedom, one of the highest honors America gives to an individual.
