Financial Institutions Division

The Financial Institutions Division has two main tasks, the first of which is to monitor and analyse FöreningsSparbanken (Swedbank), Nordea, SEB and Svenska Handelsbanken. These four Swedish banking groups make up the core of the Swedish financial system and are considered therefore to be crucial to the payment system in Sweden. The division monitors the banks’ strategies, risks and financial results to identify potential vulnerabilities but also to assess their resilience to these.

The second main task is to draw up plans for how the Riksbank should act as lender of last resort in the event of a liquidity crisis. The work on crisis management is focused on dealing with banking crises quickly and efficiently so as to reduce the costs to society.

The Financial Institutions Division contributes to the Financial Stability Report, works nationally and internationally on matters relating to financial stability and banking legislation, and formulates responses to consultation papers. The work is conducted in cooperation with Finansinspektionen, the Swedish banks and other financial market participants.

Organisation
