What's happening... Seaweek 2005Seaweek 2005

6- 13 March 2005. One Ocean - Te moana takutahi (Everything is connected). Seaweek is a national event that celebrates the coastal environment; its beauty, diversity and cultural significance to New Zealanders. The week promotes awareness and understanding of marine and coastal biodiversity, and sustainable practices both at sea and on land. Events and programmes are held throughout the week with schools and the community.

Canterbury has a long and diverse coastline stretching from Kaikoura to the Waitaki River. In between are sandy beaches of Pegasus Bay, the rocky platforms of Kaikoura and Banks Peninsula, coastal lagoons, estuaries and shingle beaches. Each area is unique with its own set of ecological processes, biodiversity, values and issues. Check out the new virtual trip to the coast and discover the sandunes of Pegasus Bay. Learn all about dunes, how they are made, what lives there and how easily these wonderful places are threatened by human activity.
