LUKASHENKO SAYS NO TO
Interfax-West 24 February 2005
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said he is aware of his country's opposition being financed by the West and has pledged to prevent any revolutions in Belarus.
"We are receiving more information on our so-called opposition's sources of financing. The West won't spare any expenses. They [the West] think that Belarus is ready for some 'orange' or, what is a rather frightening option, 'blue' or 'cornflower blue' revolution. Such 'blue' revolutions are the last thing we need," Lukashenko told a session addressing the country's anti-corruption campaign on Tuesday.
"Our homegrown opposition members do not feel comfortable about the social policy being pursued in Belarus, and supporters of this democracy are searching for any chance to disgrace our country's cause," the president said.
"They [the opposition] have already adopted the West's demands seeking economic sanctions against Belarus," he said.
"Journalists are sometimes wrong when they say that the opposition is acting against its own country. But this is not the way to treat your own country. They don't have their own country," Lukashenko said.
