Max Hutchinson interviews Elizabeth Kirk

Founder's is TV star

The spectacular Founder's Building at Royal Holloway cannot fail to attract media attention. The highlight of its Hollywood career so far was a role in the Merchant Ivory film Howard's End. Over the summer the path was paved for its meteoric rise as a star of the small screen, with the visit of three film crews.

The BBC's hugely popular Antiques Road Show filmed two episodes at the College, to be broadcast in spring 2002. Nearly 2,000 people bearing treasures thronged into the North Quad for expert advice. Media Arts students gained valuable experience of location filming in their roles as stewards.

Founder's then became the focus of tv news, when a lengthy feature of architect Max Hutchinson's assessment of the building was broadcast on the evening bulletin of BBC Newsroom South East. Postgraduate student Elizabeth Kirk was interviewed by Max (pictured above) about the history of the building as a college for the higher education of women. Max usually reviles Victorian buildings, but he admitted that the sheer exuberance and audacity of Founder's had won him over.

The College also played host to popular tv actor John Nettles, when the South Quad played the role of boys public school for an episode of Midsummer Murders, to be shown later this year.
