Harrington improves world ranking
FINAL LEADERBOARD

-3 Billy Mayfair, Justin Leonard, John Senden (Aus), Vijay Singh (Fij)
Padraig Harrington rose three places to eighth in the world rankings after winning the Barclays Classic in New York on Sunday.

The Irishman holed an epic putt of over 60 feet to eagle the final hole and seal a one-shot triumph.

Joint leader Jim Furyk was three shots ahead with five to play but Harrington was level going down the last after the American bogeyed the 17th hole.

Furyk birdied the last but Harrington's heroics took him to 10 under.

It was sweet revenge for Harrington, who was beaten in a play-off by Sergio Garcia at this event a year ago.

"The putt did everything it should have," he said of the mammoth, undulating effort that rolled sharply downhill at the end of its run.

Harrington, who secured his first US Tour success earlier this season with victory in a play-off against Vijay Singh, made a hesitant start as he began the final day level with Furyk at nine under.

He dropped a shot at the opening hole and then double-bogeyed the third, before a birdie at the seventh and an eagle three at the ninth got him back into contention.

Then came successive bogeys at 11 and 12 to give Furyk his three-shot cushion, which had gone by the time the American missed a short putt on the 17th.

"I should have knocked that putt in 99 times out of 100," said Furyk, also beaten in a play-off in this event, who has now finished second three times on the tour this season.

"There's no consolation, finishing second really stinks," he lamented.

"I think any time you're coming down the stretch, I don't care if you're Tiger Woods or Jack Nicklaus, there's nerves. That's what makes it important.

"I opened the door and I let him in and he closed it."

Singh, who began the final round four shots off the lead, dropped shots at three of the opening four holes and finished with a 73 for a share of seventh at three under.

Defending champion Garcia, who never threatened this week, carded his best round of the tournament with a closing 70, featuring a double bogey either side of two birdies early on, to finish in a tie for 22nd at two over.

Britain's Graeme McDowell, who moved up to 14th after a third-round 67, had a remarkable outward nine, with four bogeys and two birdies, and also took five at the par-three 16th to finish with a 76 for a share of 32nd.

Ryan Moore, in his first professional tournament, was tied for 51st place after ending his round with two birdies for a 72 that left him at six over.

Harrington, who has missed the cut in three of six events, including the Masters and the US Open, has had to deal with the strain of his father's serious illness.

He was calm after his hesitant start and said: "Through the early bogeys I thought I was playing fine, but it was disappointing at 11 and 12 where I just got in the wrong spot.

"This golf course is fantastic and you are under pressure all the time to get the ball in the right position on the greens. If you're slightly out of position this course is scary.

"But I came back and it's been a great tournament. I'd like to thank everyone for the welcome I've had and it's been a great week.

"The excitement of following the putt down the green was very special."
