Top seed Lindsay Davenport reached the last eight with a highly impressive 6-3 6-7 (4-7) 6-3 win over Kim Clijsters.

Clijsters was many people's tip for the title after winning in Eastbourne but Davenport was in fine form, particularly on serve.

The world number one broke three times on her way to the first set, but Clijsters saved a match point at 4-5 before taking the second on a tiebreak.

Davenport took control early in the decider and held on for victory.

The American said her serve had been the key to her victory.

"I knew I needed to serve well and I was not broken from the first game to when I was serving for the match," said Davenport.

"Against a returner like Kim that's all I can ask for. No matter what happened I stuck to my game plan of keeping the points short and it paid off.

"She wants it more than anybody out there and I didn't want to give in."

Clijsters said: "I'm very happy with the level of the match.

"I just have to keep working and get my seeding up so I don¿t face those matches in the fourth round.

"She returned a lot better than me, a lot more precise and close to the lines. It's really tough against her on grass."

Davenport will face US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last eight.

The Russian reached her second Wimbledon quarter-final in three years with a 6-4 6-3 win over unseeded Magdalena Maleeva.

Maleeva made a promising start by taking a 2-0 lead in the first set but the ninth seed reeled off the next five games before closing out the set.

The second set was fairly routine and Kuznetsova wrapped up the match with her second match point.
