Kassim Ouma in the ring

Sports International - Tears For Cheers - the Story of a Child Soldier presented by Mike Costello.

The story of Kassim Ouma and his extraordinary journey from child soldier to world boxing champion. Kidnapped and drafted into a Ugandan rebel army at the age of six, he defected to the United States after being selected to represent his country at the world military championships.

He survived homeless, penniless days in the US to build a career in professional boxing - and late last year, he became light-middleweight champion of the world.

Kassim tells an often painful story, of how he has been separated from his family and threatened with death if he returns to Uganda. He still has nightmares about the past, even when he is awake. Through it all, he's managed to live his African "American Dream".
