After a nearly year-long journey, NASA's robotic spacecraft Viking 2 landed on Mars this week in 1976 and began relaying information about the planet's atmosphere and soil and supplying colour photographs of the rocky surface.
This week in 1983 astronaut Guion S. Bluford, Jr., became the first African American launched into space.
