Internships

The Economist Group offers two types of internships: journalism internships based at The Economist and research internships based at the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The Economist:

The Economist is a weekly paper of news, ideas, opinion and analysis. With its head quarters based in London, it is printed in six countries and published on the internet, with more than 80% of its circulation outside the United Kingdom. Because of its independent and international editorial perspective, it is read by more of the world's political and business leaders than any other magazine. Editorial independence is at the heart of The Economist. The principle of anonymity is also central to the paper's philosophy. The Economist has no by-lines, because it believes that what is written is more important than who writes it.

Journalism internships with The Economist:

The Economist offers two intern places a year, in the business affairs department and the Britain department. The internships are generally for a three-month period and take place over the summer (at the London office). Unfortunately it is not possible to offer internships in any offices abroad. The pay is nominal and there is no guarantee of a job when the internship comes to an end.

The Economist has no formal training scheme. The arrangement is informal. Interns are treated much as members of staff and expected to join in accordingly.

How to apply: please send a covering letter to the appropriate editor (Business affairs or Britain), a CV and examples of any writing you think may be relevant. These should be sent to: The Economist, 25 St James’s Street, London SW1A 1HG, United Kingdom.

Applications should be made in January or February.

Other journalism internships:

The Nico Colchester Prize is organised by The Economist and the Financial Times for European citizens. This prize, which takes the form of a three-month internship at either The Economist (generally in the foreign department) or the Financial Times, is advertised in both papers around February.

The Richard Casement internship is for a would-be journalist to spend three months writing about science and technology. This internship is advertised in the science section of The Economist in February.

The Marjorie Deane Financial Journalism Foundation offers an internship for a would-be or junior journalist to spend three months at The Economist writing about finance, in order to assist their future development and career. This internship is advertised in the finance section of The Economist in March/April.

The Economist Intelligence Unit

The Economist Intelligence Unit’s comprehensive portfolio of country analysis provides information that businesses, governments and international organisations need in their dealings with individual countries. The combination of independence, global coverage, consistency and frequency is unrivalled. The London office produces a wide range of political and economic analysis and forecasts for over 180 countries.

Research internships with the Economist Intelligence Unit:

The Economist Intelligence Unit offers a number of internships. Interns can be attached to one of the regional teams covering Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Middle East & North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Western Europe. There are also opportunities to work with the economics unit as well as the web-based briefing services. All interns will be involved in information gathering, processing and analysis. For internships in the regional teams it is required that applicants have some knowledge of the relevant region.

Applicants should have an interest in economics and should be undertaking undergraduate studies that include economics. Good MS Word and Excel skills are also important

Intern duties cover:

·          Assisting editors with compilation and production of EIU reports.

·          Updating comparative regional data and analysis.

·          Researching sources of relevant macroeconomic and industry data.

·          Conducting research and analysis on specific projects and writing up results.

All internships are unpaid and last for up to 3 months. Most internships take place during the summer, although a few may be offered at other times of the year. Interns are required to work 3-5 days a week.

How to apply: please send a cover letter and CV to internships@eiu.com.
