The Riksdag (the Swedish parliament) decided on 27 October 2004, following a proposal from the Riksbank, that some older series of banknotes and coins will cease to be legal tender after 31 December 2005.

All silver-coloured 50-öre coins will become invalid. The copper-coloured 50-öre coins will continue to be legal tender.

The older, slightly larger version of the 20-krona note with the bluish shade will become invalid. The newer, slightly smaller 20-krona banknote with the purple shade – which is the one most commonly used today – will remain legal tender.
The older 100-krona and 500-krona banknotes will become invalid. Banknotes of these denominations that have a foil strip and a see-through picture will continue to be legal tender.
