Best and the Brightest

The eyes of the world... and beyond

The UA Optical Sciences Center stands alone at the forefront of the optics revolution. University-developed fiber-optics applications have transformed communications, medicine, national defense, manufacturing and information storage.

UA astronomers led an international consortium to develop the world's most powerful and most technologically advanced telescope on a single mount.

The University's Lunar and Planetary Laboratory's (LPL) role in Cassini's orbit around Saturn is larger than that of any university in the world. LPL designed and operated the imaging and atmospheric radiation investigations on the probe that descended to the surface of Saturn's moon, Titan.

Ranked among the top 10 in NASA research funding, the UA's unmatched planetary and space sciences programs were awarded a $325 million NASA grant to lead the 2007 mission to Mars.
